Jamie Starr

Was Prince’s pseudonym just a tip of his hat to his “cousin” and antiwar comrade Edwin Starr of the same 70s era that brought both to fame for Edwin’s top hits “War” and “Stop the War Now” and some of Prince’s erliest anti-war songs/anthems (Party Up, 1999, America, etc9ygfb1dscyvy.jpg) ?

Does anybody know why he chose the name Jamie Starr? The last name Starr makes some kind of sense because he is supposed to be a producer, making stars. But I wonder why Jamie. For what it's worth, the theory from the OP seems unlikely to me.

There was some explanation somewhere in some book where he combined french language for " I am a star" or "I am one star" and connected it to Je...something..and Jamie Starr, voila. No having said that, he got the Baby Im A Star/Jaimie Star from Warren Beatty. In the movie Shampoo, Betty makes the comment "cause Im a star..baby I'm a star."

en français: “Je suis l'amie de” means “I'm a friend of”; so truncated as fast french speakers might do — or an english speaker might hear: “J'aime” Starr could mean, “I'm a friends (or fan) of Starr” which makes my point that he was making a tribute to Edwin Starr and his anti-war lyrics the same way he more subtley mentioned 60’s folk music antiwar/freedom activist icon Richie Havens in “June.”
