'Does anyone here happen to think Camille was Prince's worst alias?' . No. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Stevie Wonder's "Maybe Your Baby" was the father of the Camille album. This was Prince at some of his funkiest work.

Hell naw, It's times like this we have to remember that Prince fans come from all kinds of backgrounds and might have experienced the music the first time in a different way....the Camllle songs were Prince in his prime and they still hold up the way Erotic City holds up. I'm less inclined to defend the peach lycra minis with the cut outs that is associated with being his Camille look, though. The other thing is there are also songs like Cream, and other tracks we don't associate with the project, that could have also easily been Camille songs had he ever revisited the concept. No.
He was impersonating a female. Prince said numerous times he had a woman and non gender specific inside him (see Jamie Starr and Camille) why are people making this hard to understand which it should be non factor if you focus on him beyond his showmance?
He did that a lot throughtout his career. He also wore makeup and perfume and used women's hair dye. He wore a beard. Vanity was his female alterego (he said himself he see himself in Vanity and if Prince would had been born as a girl he would look like Vanity a female version of him) and Morris Day the character was his male pimp alterego. It was stated numerous times by people who were around Prince.
So yeah he was genderbending. When people said he dates those Vanity types well I think he saw those girls like himself light skin and feminine had he been born as a woman.
He speed up Camille's voice trying to sound like a woman or his version of one. Simple as that.

I disagree with the whole "he was impersonating a female" concept on the Camille tracks. None of the songs on the Camille album are from a female's point of view. "Feel U Up" was not even originally a Camille track. "Shockadelica" is definitely talking about a witch-like female. "If I Was Your Girlfriend" is pretty much Prince lamenting about how he'd be closer to his girl if he was his girlfriend's female friend. And you can't be really "Rockhard in a Funky Place" without a penis.
The voice is just sped up which is the only difference. He's not impersonating a female. The lyrics are all male. Just Prince lyrics sped up is all.

I won't say that lyrics all male or the Camille persona. He pretty much free flow genders with the Camille alterego that include being a female at times or a feminine male and speed up the voices to sound feminine. I believed Prince wanted to be both the girlfriend and the male lover in If I was Your Girlfriend but dealt with restrictions. He pretty much wanted his cake and eat it took that goes back to Prince's genderbender. From my experience, feminine guys are desperately want to connect with women on an emotional level and no matter how much makeup they wore, how much they trash talk about men just to impress women, many women still guarded around them because they are after all still guys.
Also Prince was rumored to create Camille based on Herculine Barbin (he was raised as a girl and was a male in his adult years) and he pretty much confirmed when he was interview in 1997 with AOL.
I think Camille could had been an intersex and or nonbinary at best performed by a man who identified as a cisgender feminine guy.
Prince was obviously fascinated by intersexuality and it was so obvious in his work. From Vagina song to Vibrator playing Jamie Starr (was Jamie Starr a woman or intersex or fem male?) and talking about 'my boyfriend'. And of course I am sure you are familiar with I would die for you lyrics the 'not man or a woman something that you couldn't understand'.

I agree that it's not that cut and dry, but Camille was thought of as Prince's female alter ego. Whether accurate or not, is another story.

Camille was brilliant. Cool, fun and funky. I always thought it was a take off from Stevie's sped up voice in Maybe Your Baby. I like all the versions where we've heard the original versions, MUCH better. Strange Relationship and Feel U Up Camille versions are funked WAY up compared to the originals. I always figured the character was both male and female...thus the name.

What's your problem? Stating I bet the Camille album will be released someday is hardly crowing about it. This is a Camille thread is it not? Yes, I'm well aware that all of the songs except for "Rebirth of the Flesh" (studio) have been released on other albums, b-sides, and soundtracks. I have my own Camille playlist with a decent sounding "Rebirth"boot to kick it off. But it's not the same as having an official version of the tracks remastered and in their original order with the kooky stick-man cover. If the Estate would like to throw it in as a bonus CD for SOTT then I'm all for it. Besides, someone out there has a copy of it won in an auction. What's wrong with wanting my own official copy? Just to have an official "Rebirth of the Flesh" on it would be worth the ticket price alone. Fuck the NPG Music Club rehearsal version.

I know there's a market for the perpetual double-dip, but to a fair amount of fans it seems counter-intuitive to be advocating the official release of essentially playlists and "alternate configurations" of songs that were mostly already released 30 years ago when there's so much unreleased material out there.

why let the estate konw some pople r dumb enough to buy the camille album ...instead of wanting stuff we havent heard...they WILL include it somewhere INSTEAD of an unreleased album....

There's nothing passive about Bart's aggression.
For me Camille and his pitch manipulation experiments generally (on instruments) were among the most interesting things that he ever did. As others have said, P-Funk did similar things, but Prince took it to a whole new level of sophistication – check out the intro guitar work on the full version of Hello, or Erotic City for example. As you say, you're more of a "hits" guy though, which is fine. I'm more of an Aphex Twin's "Funny Little Man" type - love a bit of chipmunk me.
