FUNNY, AMUSING OR CURIOUS MOMENTS FROM THE 1999 VAULT TRACKS

For me there are some quite curious/interesting/funny things to hear from the recent remaster.

I have to say they've done a fantastic job on the sound, it sounds, fresh, alive and as if he's still here with us and a lot better sonically than some of his own more recent, later releases.

BOLD GENERATION

Somehow sounds strange to hear it in a different key, but strangely charming. It doesn't sound fully finished to me, more like a demo. The jazz style piano in the background is an interesting addition, it somehow sounds incongruous to the rest of the song but I like it.

I find the lip/mouth slapping sounds near the end rather strange but amusing, first time i think we've heard Prince do that on record (maybe apart from Purple Music).

However the Graffiti Bridge version still beats it for me.

NO CALL U

A few more verses and more narration than the bootleg version. At first it's written as from the male perspective but then soon switches as if it's from a female perspective, some lines he addresses to a 'girl' and others a 'boy'. I guess this was intended for Vanity 6. I like the narration but I also love the beat alone, without it, as in the bootleg, as it's very catchy. The only major miss here is the absence of the scream at the end fade out, I always loved that in the bootleg.

VAGINA

Defintely sounds Dirty Mind ish. Also reminds me a bit of his pre 1980's work, like Prince/For You after where he sings the part 'She was so young, so understanding..."

As someone here pointed out, surely it should have been called 'Vaginis' if he's half boy/half girl!

Not sure if this was intended for Vanity due to the subject matter, however her stage name was originally going to be Vagina and the band were to be known as Vagina 6.

This song seems to point to flirtation with gay experiences/bisexuality, or at least the wish to dare, recalling his ground breaking, innovative nature in his heydey.

REARRANGE

Often compared to Lady Cab Driver but it also bears a strong resemblence to Sexy Dancer in the guitar parts. When i first heard it this was the song that came to mind.

MONEY DON'T GROW ON TREES

Likeable song, sounds very similar to TURN IT UP, especially the chorus repetition part. As Princevault noted it also has similarities with Baby Don't Care (which also shares the influence of Turn It Up). Has all the hallmark sounds of a classic Prince song, screams, beats etc. Always amazes me how early on in his career he had his whole 'Prince' sound style figured out that he used all through his years.

YAH, U KNOW

I didn't think the 1986 version with the horns could be topped but somehow this 1982 version has an endearing, very 1999 era industrial sound to it. I love the kind of half wailing, speaking intro, somehow strangely hypnotic. An ideal would be this voice added to the 1986 version too. I would have liked to have heard a longer version of this 1982 one, assuming it exists with the instrumental parts of the 1986 version.

YOU'RE ALL I WANT

As someone wrote on here, I also originally expected this to be a love ballad. However, it's the perfect, happy go lucky, newly in love, schmaltzy, feel good pre-Christmas song - it even mentions Christmas! Very catchy. It recalls Delirious, and has the same bassline.

IF IT'LL MAKE U HAPPY

Excellent song, although theres not much extra in the final minutes to what we had in the shortened version bootleg. Love the creativity and sound of this.

PURPLE MUSIC

This is a slightly different version to the bootleg, with more overdubs. Not sure if they really detract or add to it to be honest, will have to listen more! But so nice to hear it sounding fresh. I find it odd they didn't sequence this at the start of the CD, it's the ideal beginning song.

POSSESSED

So nice to hear this absolute classic released properly! It's got to be in one of the top 10 best unreleased Prince songs.

MOONBEAM LEVELS

Love this but both this version and the one on 4ever sound like they come in too early, they should come in right at the beat, swish sound like they do in the bootleg version, flows much better IMO.

TEACHER, TEACHER

Amazed at how similar this actually is to the 1986 version, he really didn't make many changes apart from W & L vocals. I always assumed they had a lot of input in this, clearly not. Love the guitar in this.

MISSING ITEMS:

People keep mentioning LUST U ALWAYS AND EXTRALOVEABLE being absent but

what about: Climax (or Divinity as some have called it), would have fitted very well here, Baby You're A Trip (Prince only version which is far superior), Tricky, Lust U Always instrumental, Strange Relationship 1982 or the original 1982 version of Wonderful Ass written about Vanity (which is amazing too).

I would also have loved to have seen a full remaster of the Vanity 6 album included as well as What Time Is it? which were also Prince penned and contain some gems!

Really it was a classic and creative period in Prince history!

I may add some more as I think of them! Feel free to share your thoughts or your opinions!
