Purple Rain added to national film registry “Purple Rain,” “Clerks,” “She’s Gotta Have It,” “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” “Amadeus,” “Sleeping Beauty,””Boys Don’t Cry” and “The Last Waltz” are among this year’s additions to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. The list also includes 1944’s “Gaslight,” starring Ingrid Bergman in an Oscar-winning performance; the 1955 film noir “The Phenix City Story,” based on a real-life murder in Alabama; Disney’s 1959 canine tearjerker “Old Yeller”; Oliver Stone’s 1986 Best Picture winner “Platoon,” based on his own experiences in Vietnam; and Luis Valdez’s “Zoot Suit,” which tells the story of the 1943 Sleepy Lagoon Murder and the racially charged riots that followed. A place on the list — always made up of 25 films — guarantees the film will be preserved under the terms of the National Film Preservation Act. The criteria for selection is that the movies are “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant...

- Honestly, great news. “Purple Rain,” as well as “Amadeus,” (and ”Boys Don’t Cry,” “The Last Waltz," “Gaslight,” “The Phenix City Story,” as well as “Platoon”) are all favorite films of mine. - Now they can get interested in re-releasing "Purple Rain" again, sort of like a heavy box-set, with a Director's cut, deleted scenes, original script printed in bookform, interviews with cooperators, filmcrew, actors, extra's, promotion, and so much more... Maybe this is an idea for the publisher TASCHEN ? They did a tremndous nice work on all Stanley Kubrick films, as well as some other films (although i think they don't have the film included). Would be nice, since this movie is of great value for Prince's whole career as we know it. - "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. Talk about a film that had a great effect on popular culture!! How long was WDC on the billboard charts that year, anyway? People were wearing outfits like his to the clubs, painting they motorcycles purple, all sorts of crazy stuff. For us though, it was justification of the artist we already held in high esteem musically. Who knew he could come up with a movie, act in it, and write the score?
