"High"... Is this any good?

High was released initially as an mp3 download as part of NPG Music Club Edition # 11, although a clip of the song had been included ten months earlier as part of NPG Ahdio Show # 1. In 2004, the track was included as the seventh track on the compilation album The Chocolate Invasion.

To me personally the song is great, but the chorus completely sucks. I know that sounds odd, but reminds me production wise of Emancipation era stuff. I definitely jammed to it when it was new

The intro could pass for a game show theme!

Hate to be that orger but go listen to it for yourself! 😀 It's not like it isn't readily available like back when I bought a bootleg of album cuz of my ignorance n desire to hear more stuff. Don't even think the whole song was up there 😂🤬. Ok song got no problem with the hook or any part of it really. My Medallion on the other hand I'll just stay mum on lurking

It's a fun, funky track with some nice flourishes. Join Tidal on a free trial and you can stream it and most of the other NPGMC tracks for no cost at all. You can also download both NPGMC albums (Chocolate Invasion and The Slaughterhouse) for a price from their store.

Positive, uplifting but a bit superficial/plasticy sounding like much of the music from the NPGMC period.

I always thought he was singing "Gonna get you hot' rather than 'high'. wink

A good light and breezy track. I like it when I hear it on shuffle. Underrated. A cool track, would have liked to find it on a b side. It would have been nice as the B side for love sign (I know it was released after love sign and love sign was a video and not really a single BUT) looking for a track that it could pair with.

It could have fit with Dance 4 me to now that I think about it.

Or Love from 3121 if that would have been released as a singe.

Has that later period Prince feel. I associate it with tracks like 2morrow (though not as Jazzy) or perhaps get your groove on.

It never sounded finished to me. Not much of a hook, super spare production. Would have been extremely surprised to see it become a title track to an album like was planned in 2000.

Defo on the "all time shittiest Prince track" list, for me anyway

.

I hate it.

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

Really like it, and Femi Jiya said it was a track Prince actually spent a lo of time on with mixing. I think it shows.

Love the varied opinions! I think it is one of his many
"there is a better song in there somewhere songs" the idea is good but the melody, accompaniment and rhythm are all lacking...

I used to have the NPG Ahdio edit burned on a CD and would play it over and over that summer. Great summer tune.

I think it's very catchy, and I love what's happening rhythmically with the drum programming and rhythm guitar. I think it's cool when he takes an instrument like a guitar and plays it almost like a percussion part in the groove.

During The Rainbow Children Celebration that year, he came into one of the group discussions and one of the things he talked about was this song, and how he would fight with radio programmers to get it played. "How can a dope song like High not get on the radio?" Obviously, he thought quite highly of it.

Yes, it's corny as hell, and no it wouldn't have been the hit in 2001 that he thought it would have been, but it is good fun nonetheless.

Yes. I thought the High project has some very good stuff. Much better than Rave and may have with the right video and promotion been a decent hit for him.
