Cmon family, it was produced 20 years ago.
P was still the hottest, coolest and best talent in the music business.

Probably under limited budget by ppv mgmt tho.

Certainly, Prince made a small fortune on this program special. đź’ś

Was he still the hottest in 2000?

I don't think any of this defines whether or not it was a high or low point though.

I am happy to have it, but it was average at best when comparing most of his shows.

Agree. And the editing of the concert video is just horrific, with cuts seemingly every half second. It's nearly seizure-inducing.

Yeah. At that time Prince was NOT any of that. In fact, this was the lowest point in his career. He came off as out of touch and pandering. Going on TRL...gawd that ish was cringeworthy. The hard sell of doing morning shows and MTV awards to shill Rave. 1999 could and should have been his year, could have had many important situations and events of his works and associates but we got The Year 2000 as the culmination lol. And this isnt mentioning the reported debacle of what the audience went through to get inside.

I regret that his duet with Johnny Lang wasn't on the DVD

A high point? Is this even a serious question? lol

IMHO this is one of the most embarrassing things Prince has ever done. It was unwatchable to me, the whole thing screamed 'washed out popstar'. I was glad to see Prince found himself again during the ONA tour.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

For me the high point was "She's Always In My Hair". The low point was the Larry Graham set, which was mega lame.

He ruined “Purple Rain” with his preaching horseshit.

No. Personally, with hindsight being 20/20 and all; I think it was actually the beginning of the end. When Prince attempted to do all those splits but didn't finish, I felt in my soul, something had just went horribly wrong and I believe to this day that it did. And whatever happened, was the catalyst of all that would happen over the next 16 years.

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

No, like the album , like the endless European TV appearance including kids TV shows! etc it sounded & felt like a compromise. I ahve to say though that he looked stunning!

The blues bit was incredible though.

I am being hard because his worst would be most artists career best!

I don't mind the Spirituality version, it feels kind of tongue in cheek and if that's what it took for him to play that song again I was cool with it. The Christ though, yeah I don't like that one.

The whole Rave un2 period was IMO the lowest point of the whole 90's (perhaps his career at that time) and I have to admit it was the first time I started losing faith in him as an artist... But it made the impact of "The Rainbow Children" even more incredible. He went from cheap, bland R&B plastic production with guest stars and rappers to pure, organic and original sounds, a drummer from another planet and truly inspired composition. We had to go to Rave to get to the rainbow children so I'm glad it's there and I will watch the rave convert every now and again and happy to have both in2 and un2 on vinyl cause they sound far better than the original CDs but make no mistake no one was loving this concert, enjoying it a bit maybe but far from a high point.

Exactly how I flt about it. Watched it once and felt the magic had gone, had that same washed out, finished feeling. To me it was his last attempt at trying to run with the new breed and be relevant. The live shows at this time were also a low point for me, with what seems a lot of songs done in a medly, edited way, that was just frustrating.

I think he went away, took stock of his life, age and future and did something from the heart. Whether you like it or not, and it's proably the most divisive record with the fans, but the Rainbow Children was a turning point. Lyrics aside, the music was fabulous, the live shows were some of his best and I think it gave him a new lease.

For me it was all good from then on.

Truly, it's a toss up which converted song is worse.

I agree with many of the negative comments on here.

But there are some real high points. It was the first time I'd heard 'She's Always in My Hair' and it just blew me away.

The Purple House/Nothing Compares 2 U section is something I love to show to people.

It also remains the only truly crisp-looking live show of the last two decades of his career (Aladdin is a disgrace in that regard).

I think it's a pretty cool concert to have because the audio/video quality is so much better than what had been released at that point, in terms of concert videos. I like it better than the Vegas concert video a few years later.

.

As many of pointed out, there are considerable shortcomings with this particular show especially when compared to his peak level performances. That said, for me a lot of is irrevelant at this point. I can't bring myself to get worked up about what didn't work about this show. It's an easy way to see a well-shot, well-recorded, fun concert with some neat guest performances.

.

I don't watch it often, but given the A/V quality it's something I'd rather put on than the 1999 concert dvd (solely due to that one's wretched A/V quality).

.

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

It was the low point. Its what made Rainbow Children so refreshing. The music was so organic and creative it helped me forget the entire Rave era

Though the entire Rave era handily beats the era that followed the brief Rainbow Children era (which itself was no great shakes).

+1 on being one of the great performances of 'She's Always in My Hair'...But I would also not consider this a high point of his career. If he performed more Rave album tracks, and it was better edited I would enjoy it more.

It was the BIGGEST dissapointment since 1983 when we all said we couldnt wait for the end of the century, and gather around to sing 1999 on NYE.

Such a let down.

Had all the ingrediants to be an aweome event especially with Morris there.
Instead it turned into the Prince and Larry preaching hour.

Ive watched it a few times and fast forwarded tthrough it every time. confused

Man, I still don't get the hate for this show aside from the jerky editing. Every non hardcore fan I've showed it to really liked it. Seems like fans dislike it the most, which makes sense they've seen him do far better, but I don't see how it's an objectively bad performance.

It's because we know he can do so much better. I was a relatively new hardcore fan at the time, and i watched with friends over and over for a few years.

No. It really fell flat. I didn't really care for the album either. Don't get me wrong, it's a good album, but I absolutely loved "New Power Soul" (it's in my top 3) and "Rave" was nowhere near as good as NPS (in my uppopular opinion!) Particularly uninspired was The Time's performance of "The Bird". It just seemed to me like Morris wasn't really into it.

Well all you need to do is look at my avatar, which I've had since joining the Org, to know how I feel about this concert. I have the full DVD and I play it often.

Sure, it could have been better. But Lenny was easily the highlight of the show, especially as he and Prince came together to perform American Woman. I never get tired watching that performance!

Interesting facts: Lenny was vacationing in the Bahamas when Prince called him and asked him to fly to Paisley Park for the show, which Lenny obviously did despite sub-zero temps and snow when he got there.

And Lenny was nearly falling asleep before performing, as Prince kept him up for two days straight. lol
