Watched the DVD today. It leaves a lot to be desired.

Executive Producer for the DVD Restoration was Duane Tudhal.

The video sucked, couldn't tell what color he was wearing half the time, fuzzy, and lines running thru it also cut out at about the 15 minute mark.

Be thankful for what you get.

I get the sentiment but when you pay for a high quality DVD and get a turd it's really hard to be thankful.

Duane is a big fan and has a decent book out a few years ago. He would have done his utmost to get it as good as he could

Here's one guy's perspective... This video is many things. But chiefly, it is a historical document.

It's 1982. This was the technology available to Prince in that venue at that time. Plus, it was 1982. Thus, lots of smoke and neon and some harsh lighting effects. And, it was 1982. At that time, Prince was into the neo-Blade-Runner-ish-ness of it all.

Did I mention that it was 1982? It’s not supposed to look like 2019.

Do all of the quality issues cited here exist? Sure. But who cares? Here’s how to fix them: Put this video on your largest available screen. Then, send the audio through your good speakers or headphones. Finally, turn the volume up. See? Fixed!

This is a document of a moment. And that moment was 1982.

I appreciate this moment. Man, was that good. “Head” as the closer was unexpected #FIRE!

I just watched the DVD.

It was the first time I had ever seen a 1999 tour concert in full.

I enjoyed it, Head was the highlight. It needed more close ups of Jill.

I watched the Houston video last night and thought the quality of it was pretty darn good. Way better than anything I have seen over the decades of collecting.

This is especially true consiidering the source tape was probably VHS and the concert was not "lit" for video taping purposes.

The audio part of it was equally as good, nice and clear. However I was not crazy about the echo on the sound track that was consistent throughout the show. Don't think I've ever heard any of the other shows from this tour on video sound that way to my ears.

It could be just an "off night" for the sound man (Cubby). At least I hope that is the case.

Overall I am very pleased with the release of the video. Thanks to all involved for this selection.

It could have been perfect at the venue. Mixing for house sound is very different than mixing for a recording.

^ Very true, but since the audio was taken from the VHS tape, I would have thought it would sound the same as other shows from that tour. (ie. Lakeland and Minneapolis) But that's not the case. Neither of those two other shows have the same echo to the audio to my ears.

^ I agree. The video quality is perfectly fine considering the age and source format.

People are spoiled these days with HDTC, 4k, etc. Expectations should be realistic.

From what I heard, it's a single layer DVD with no menu. That's the definition of cheap.

Even the disc with Purple Rain Deluxe was dual layer with a basic menu.

The Purple Rain Deluxe DVD was not anamorphic. You wouldn't notice on a flat/widescreen TV, but if you pop it in on an older (fullscreen) TV, you'll find that the entire image is framed with black bars on all 4 sides.

At least this new one is presented proper on all screens.

If you buy a digital download copy of The Super Deluxe set from Amazon or iTunes, does it include the video files from the DVD? From a technical standpoint I don't see why it couldn't -- they could be treated as music videos. And iTunes already integrates music videos into its music app.

Good question.

If it does, I wonder how it would work? That would be a large file to download no?

No, it's exclusive to the physical set.

I think it was seeing Jill and Lisa behind the keyboards that got me hooked on Prince as an 11 yr old kid. It was the closest thing to porn at the time, LOL

That's about where I was with it.

I was pretty shocked at the low quality of the audio and video but once I got over it, the show seemed to ascend in an almost straight line. Each song built on the last and at a certain point the energy just reached real lift off (after How Come U Don't Call Me) and by the end I didn't want to stop.

I didn't expect the hiss and the unbalanced sound quality though. A little let down by it, TBH, but it's nice to have and I'd never seen it before.

Looking forward to a proper live box set that's really professionally done covering multiple stages of his career and with some aftershows
