What if? Purple Rain Follow Up Album

So I just finished reading Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions which is awesome if you want to know more about all the music he created during that time. But anyway it got me thinking...what if Prince ended up releasing a follow up to Purple Rain that was as radio friendly as possible and had a similar sound as PR that would have made all those WB execs happy. NOTE: I'm glad he didn't do that and pushed the envelope with another sound.

Here is what I think that would maybe have looked like...I tried to make it flow the same as PR:

Album: Dance Electric

Dance Electric

The Glamorous Life (Duet w/ Sheila E)/B Side Noon Rendezvous - Second Single

Electric Intercourse

Pop Life

We Can Funk/B Side We Can Fuck - DJ Special Release

Raspberry Beret/B Side She's Always in My Hair - First Single

Manic Monday/B Side Wonderful Ass - Third Single

Roadhouse Garden

Nothing Compares to You/B Side Screams of Passion - Fourth and final single

Now what is yours? Here are the rules...had to be something created during or before ATWIAD, formally released on a studio album (no unreleased boots unfortunately), no more than 10 tracks and as close to the sound of purple rain and hit friendly as possible.

ATWIAD I absolutely LOOOOOVE

So if I had my way he would release two albums

The Family album needed to be released as is (Screams of Passion a duet with Prince & Susannah)

Romance 1600 needed some better material

A Jill Jones Album

.

Our Destiny

Roadhouse Garden

the Dance Electric (kick off song BUT being the Rude boy, having released 4 the Tears in Your Eyes with the WATW project I would have him release 4 the Tears in Your Eyes as a B side)

Traffic Jam

Love & Sex

Electric Intercourse w/We Can Fuck(B side)

G-Spot

Wonderful Ass

Manic Monday

.

I'm trying to play with 'the Dawn' 'Possessed' and 'Old Friends 4 Sale' 'Some1 2 Call"to fit in

Album title: Moonbeam Levels

.

Side A:

Our Destiny

Roadhouse Garden

All Day, All Night

Electric Intercourse*

Moonbeam Levels

.

Side B:

Extra Loveable

Wonderful Ass

Possessed

She's Always In My Hair

We Can Fuck

.

Singles:

Moonbeam Levels bw/ Do Yourself a Favour

Extra Loveable bw/ Lust U Always

She's Always In My Hair bw/ Strange Way

.

*Basic track taken from the First Avenue Rehearsal. Mixed and dubbed in similar fasion to the Purple Rain tracks.

.

I was tempted to include Mutiny & Desire, but I didn't want to mess up The Family album.

.

EDIT - Sorry, just read the rule about unreleased tracks after compiling my list. I'll have another stab at this later.

This got me thinking... what if "Our Destiny" went straight into "All Day, All Night"? The latter is a way better song than "Roadhouse Garden" in my opinion, and would complement the theatrical feel of the opening track.

I missed the mark

I'm confused by the rules

We Can Funk was made in 1986

and We Can Fuck was never released formally on a studio album(so that would make it an unreleased boot)
Manic Monday was formally released by the Bangles Dec of 1985 after ATWIAD
Wonderful Ass would be a unreleased boot

Roadhouse Garden would be an unreleased boot

Elecetric Intercourser would be an unreleased boot

and Dance Electric recorded before April 1985 ATWIAD release was not formally released by AC until July 1985

.

3 no more than 10 tracks
4 close to the sound of purple rain
5 hit friendly as possible.

ATWIAD is Purple Rain II anyway. The blue print for the album is practically identical to PR.

Yea those rules sucked and weren't very clear...apologies. I had just read that book and it had me thinking about all the material he was creating during that purple rain period. He literally could have just taken all those extra songs and released them. So my thought process was given that Manic Monday was formally release but written during PR it would have been a good candidate. Also according to the book We Can Funk was actually re-recorded with those toned down lyrics prior to 86. Not sure if there is a boot of that or if its still sitting in the vault so see I'm already breaking my own rules.

With that said i would definitely recomend that book. You would be amazed!

I never really understood why people regard ATWIAD as such a huge departure from the Purple Rain era sound. Even Prince seemed to think it was so drastically different but to me it still sounds a lot like part of the Purple Rain era or at least an extension of it. The LM-1 right at the beginning of She´s Always In My Hair, the guitar playing, or songs like Temptation and its "dirty" lyrics reminiscent of Darling Nikki, and America or The Ladder sound very much like Purple Rain era songs, which they of course were because some of them were recorded in the same era or during the PR tour. Yet Prince himself often said that it would´ve been so easy to just continue where Let´s Go Crazy ended (I´m just paraphrasing here).

-

The Parade album on the other hand , now THAT was a whole different sound and style and asthetic but ATWIAD was still very purple to me. Not that that´s a bad thing.

.

If I recall correctly there was a rather in-depth article about this very same topic in Uptown magazine many, many years ago, and they basically said what we are saying here.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Yeah I already have the book

If you remove formally released on a studio album (no unreleased boots unfortunately) then this can work

Prince told the Electrifying Mojo that he thought the album was funky. And yeah, he said it'd be really easy to open a new album with the guitar solo from "Let's Go Crazy." I mean, he may as well have.

But to be more specific w/ comparisons...

Both albums open with a one note song, slowly brings in drums, and almost turns into a chant by the end.

"Raspberry Beret" and "Take Me With You" are continuations of the same story, and sound the same. It's no suprise that he used to play them back to back in the late 90s (even on the Rave Un2 The Year 2000 DVD).

Third song ballad: "The Beautiful Ones" - "Condition of the Heart."

"America" and "Baby I'm A Star" uses the same Linn drum pattern.

"Pop Life" is that nice mid-tempo comfy song, just like "I Would Die 4 U", or even "When Doves Cry."

"The Ladder" is "Purple Rain", religious, anthemic, tells a story.

"Temptation" is "Darling Nikki", dirty, sexual, raucous.

"Tamborine" is "When Doves Cry", they're both spartan in production, relying heavily on percussion. The irony is that one is without a bass, and the other depends on it.

And even with "Temptation"'s tag ending, it reminds us of the extra strings added to the end of "Purple Rain."

"Paisley Park" could also be compared to "When Doves Cry" in certain ways.

Five songs on the first side, four songs on the second side.

If the OP searches, there have been deeper discussions on here, even in the last couple of years, about the vast similarities between PR and ATWIAD. Parade almost feels like Controversy, where people consider the latter a segue album, something experimental, very different. Parade was that way, too. It connected the lighter sensibilities of ATWIAD with the grittier one-man show we saw on SOTT. Parade had some grittier sounding songs like "Anotherloverholenyohead" or "Girls and Boys" (where as something like "Kiss" or even "Life Can Be So Nice" sounds brighter and cleaner).

The era yes, the album not so much. I've been going over it for a while trying to catch the feel. Dear Michaelangelo, A Love Bizarre, Merci4theSpeedofaMadClownInSummer are it. I could see Adonis & Bathsheba mixed with these 3 I love. Steph get's so guitar soloing. Glamorous Life was a strong piece of work from beginning to end. Clear story being told. R1600 not so much.

I think "Sister Fate" was a weak first single. They should have chosen "Toy Box"....a fun, naughty song that is more exciting smile

I read that the actual title of that album was Katrina's Paper Dolls and not Roadhouse Garden.
I think Prince just retitled it to Roadhouse Garden when he wanted to release it with Wendy and Lisa.
No facts or anything but just what I read.
I ahve a old Music Express (Dutch music magazine) from the 80's that mentioned Katrina's Paper Dolls and this title was sourced from 'Prince's bodyguard brother' (that's teh actual name of the source they used for the info.) so proabbly Duane Nelson(?)

Interesting - I had no idea that title had existed in the wild for so long. I think Lisa and Wendy have mentioned the follow up during the last few years of interviews, so that might be a good place to start.
