To be fair, you are comparing a remastered outtake to an original master album from 1980. The song sounds exactly like all the DM material and it would not surprise me if this actually had nothing to do with 1999.

There's some similarities. But the song was indeed recorded during the summer of '82 (likely August). Don Batts engineered this song.

The only time a situation like this happened, it was for "Kiss Me Quick". We all thought it was recorded in '81, but because of its resemblance with material from the "Prince" album, we had some doubts. Turns out that it was actually very likely to be recorded in '79. So we can affirm this idea with this song.

To my ears, Kiss Me Quick sounds exactly like a 79 song. Especially in the vocal harmony, which is often what gives an era away second to the production and arrangement. I don't hear anything close to Controversy in Kiss Me Quick so I'm not that sure why someone even thought it was from that era.

This song is a curious case because even on the box there is a lot of extra info that implies some stuff we didn't know. To me, it sounds entirely plausible that one song was recorded on the tape for some time and then the other two were added after because it was space that existed.

It'd be interesting if Don Batts actually remembered the song and had some info on it's creation.

Listening to it really solidifies for me that what I most want to hear is songs I never heard before or songs that are radically different from what I’ve heard. “Don’t Let Him Fool Ya” sounds very similar to the bootleg I already heard and therefore just isn’t that exciting to me (no fault to the estate). Whereas, I am loving “International Lover (Take 1) [Live in Studio]” and “I Feel for You (acoustic demo)” which are both new to my ears. I can only imagine that if all three were new to me, then I might rate them differently.

So what does all this rambling mean ... it means I’m super psyched for 1999 Super Deluxe because it has at least a half dozen songs I’ve never heard before!

I know some people here are complaining about the quality, but that's just because they used the original 1/2" tape mix... Which I was actually happy about when I found out (they weren't able to fuck it up too bad from what Prince and Don Batts did back in the day...)

Original 1/2" (& 1/4" in at least 1 case) mixes should be used with "Can't Stop" and "Do Yourself A Favor" (and I believe "Turn It Up" and the alt. "Something In The Water").

I mean I appreciate them because of the energy and because it's Prince, of course, but they just don't take me to the places that other songs from this era do. But again, maybe hearing them in their proper fidelity will give me a new appreciation. I'm already appreciating International Lover and Don't Let Him Fool Ya much more than I previously did.

As for the song, I didn't have a lot of interest when I first heard it a few Blast from the Pasts ago. It really sounds like something he could do in his sleep. It is still a thrill to hear him so clear...I'll have my real impression made when I play it nice and loud when I get my hand on the discs. I'm supremely excited about the remaster job on the album. I really do not think i've ever heard (as someone on P&B said) the lin drum sound so crisp, clear and full than I did on the Baby You're a Trip from Originals. I can just imagine how amazing 1999 is going to sound.
