Electric Intercourse(Live Version from First Avenue)

This is just a reminder to the Prince Estate that SOME OF US, still want the First Avenue Show(August, 1983) released.

Or at the very least, WE WANT 'ELECTRIC INTERCOURSE'(Live) from that show. Just like the 'I Feel For You' one off, you could release that the same way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anybody with me?

but we already have the far superior studio version... releasing the song separate from the concert makes no sense to me at all. And yeah, sure, release the First Avenue concert, but I'm not really looking forward to yet another Purple Rain era release. Maybe a DVD box set with First Avenue shows? The Sign of the Times rehearsal, the Controversy era one-off show that opens with Bambi, maybe a birthday show or two... That'd be exciting!

A complete CD/DVD collection of all First Avenue shows/performances would be perfect. Including one off performances or when he joined in with other bands etc.

Haven't we all already got that version of EI on a bootleg? Not bad quality either. I know everyone is different but I don't understand why people ask for stuff they already have or have heard. Personally I want the unheard stuff.

That's not to say I'd be disapointed with EI live or the concert being released officially and having the chance to give someone official some money for it, not at all. It's just not my preference.

RIP sad

When the PR Deluxe was released, I saw that the Estate mentioned "Studio Version". This notation meant for me that the Estate was well aware that "a live version" was circulating. So why not then an official release?

This show would be perfect for a Super deluxe Purple Rain box set.

I personally hate the studio version. Sounds much better in his lower register.

I feel the same about Witness 4 the prosecution. The solo version is so weak

It isn't. Not even remotely.

I'm of the opposite opinion. The studio version is like a brilliant transition between the sounds of 1999 and Purple Rain with a truly remarkable vocal take and that drumbeat. The sparse production brings all the focus on his vocals. I always felt the live version was too messy.

I like both versions, A-side/B-side, digital download and 7", problem solved.

I thought that I had the rehearsal version -- the one where he yells "Wake up, Wendy!" and explains that he sings the first "intercourse". But I just listened to my copy and that part is missing!

So now I'm not sure what version I have. The copy I have sounds exactly as I remember the rehearsal version, minus the stage directions to Wendy. Based on the YouTube clips of the '83 First Avenue performance, I don't think it's the live version everyone is talking about in this thread.

Are there two rehearsal versions floating around, one with and one without him talking to Wendy?

Regardless, the version I have is one-trillion times better than the studio version.

There are 3 versions - the raw rehearsal version ("Wake up Wendy!"), the cleaned up rehearsal version (polished by T), and the live version.

Thanks for clearing that up. I must have the clean-up rehearsal. What do you mean "polished by T"?

T was asked to clean up the rehearsal version to make it sound as much like a studio version as possible. T is a guy who is responsible for a lot of the bootlegs we all have.

Ah, I didn't know who T was. I figured you weren't talking about Tony M.

Are the raw rehearsal version and the polished rehearsal version the same exact take, with the latter being a manipulated version of the former? Or are they two different takes?

Same takes! Just with most of Prince's commentary and directions taken out (save for, I believe, "Mash it!").

Listening to the studio version as I type. What's not to like? Again, Prince at his weird, quirky best. NOBODY was doing this back in the day - or even today. Regarding the live version, I thought it leaked in perfect quality within the past couple of years. Anybody?

Gotcha. Thanks for the info and clarification.

I'm a bit disappointed I no longer have the raw version. There was some charm in hearing him give instructions.

Is there a version in existence that's similar to IWD4Y/BIAS/PR, being overdubbed from the First Avenue performance?

Overdubbed by Prince? Nope. He began working on The Beautiful Ones prior to any overdub work going into Electric Intercourse.

Electric Intercourse is FAR superior than the studio version. Don't get me wrong the studio version is good but doesn't capture that emotion or passion that the live version does. I was a little underwelmed when I first heard studio version as I had huge expectations that it would be similar to the one performed live.

For those that disagree I ask that you pull up the video on YouTube and take a listen to minute 3. The piano solo seeps with emotion and torment. Just brilliant!! This was the song that gave me the realization that there was amazing unreleased music and was the ONE song that I couldn't wait to hear on the new expanded version. Maybe my expectations were too high but as I said I was a bit underwhelmed with that version. To me it actually sounds like an early version when Prince was still working on the song and often wonder if there is an updated version that is more close to the First Avernue live or rehearsal ones that were cleaned up by the legendary T.

My 2 cents!

I agree!

The live version is FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On a side note...who the heck is this "T" person and do they lurk on this forum somewhere? "T" if you're reading this create a topic and tell us all the goodies you have/heard/worked in the studio with Prince/whatever!

To me the live version is the definative version of teh song and after that the 10 minute rehearsal take where they do the song back to back from the '1983 Live' bootleg.

It's just a bit different, the vibe is different to the live version. People were used to the live version so were hoping for a perfect sounding studio version of it, but got something quite different.

Agreed! The studio version feels like an early take whereas the live is closer to what Prince would have released had it found its way to the record or B-Side. Which makes me wonder if there is another studio version out there that is more heavy with the piano versus synth. Probably a combination like The Beautiful Ones which ended up replacing this song.

different strokes. Could (and can) never listen to the live version all the way through. It just bores me to tears. The studio version I kind of dig. Not his best song ever, but solid.
