When i first heard this when it came out, i was gutted! I thought it was rubbish. And now, years later, I really enjoy it. Its funky for sure. So strange that a record years later can change your thoughts on it

This album is dispised by most fans, but I absolutely love the title song, Newpower Soul. I think Mad sex is pretty good, and Push it Up is a guilty pleasure of mine.

Mad Sex is brilliant, underrated. The keyboard dabs, jittery funk and Muted horn lines are so cool. Suprised it doesn’t get more love.

Is....... For me, in the bottom three of his output.

Only Karmasutra and Hit n Run 1 rate worse IMO. The production is so souless.

Even if just a few tunes mixed in were recorded more organically it would have made a big difference to the overall vibe.

Exactly the songs that I like on that album. wink

I find the rest almost unlistenable, but that´s still six good songs on the album, and six good songs on an album is pretty good, even though in hindsight, it was not really a strong album.

Same, but listening to it on its own it has merit and it is a very funky album. Like it very much.

don't forget "when U love somebody". it's actually a great little tune and the last minute or so,
when it goes all instrumental, with that guitar, is just great cool

I can get behind this idea. It's not a classic but doesn't deserve the hate it gets.

I like all those records.

I'm in the category of "more is better" regarding the 90's output since it gave me more songs to select from that suited my individual tastes. Problem was, that also meant more mediocre/shit songs too and, without a label helping to control and edit his releases, Prince tended to just barf stuff out there and call it an album sometimes; or worse, bog us down in segues and Tony M. rapping on us. I much preferred the 3cd set of Emancipation that I could whittle down to a single or double album and trim off the fat, along with the cool knowledge that everyone's "Emacipation - 1 CD" mix will be different.

I think his band and his live material in that decade was insanely good as well - more organic sounding and with more guitar. Michael B gave the drum sound a tremendous and much needed lift IMO that added some crunch fuel to his bottom end (though obviously not on NPS or Emancipation). I brought him up since you shit on TGE.

Prince also buried some of his best work during this decade, which is weird since he could release anything he felt like. "Days of Wild" isn't on an album (the SAIMH of the 90's), only hardcore fans know about "Exodus" and even "Wasted Kisses" is a hidden track on NPS.

Also, strongly disagree with the bolded part. Every album he released has at least one or two outstanding tracks on it with the exceptions of NEWS and Planet Earth.

I never "changed my mind" personally. Maybe some people did once they revisited it and got over the dumb, superficial things like "OMG THE COVER" and actually listened to the thing. I NEVER got everyone's problem with it tbh.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a top tier album for but I'd lump it in with Musicology, Lotusflower and 3121 quality and consistency wise and it's no better or worse than those. It was basically like every album he release after a while: 2 or 3 great tracks, 2 or 3 good ones, 2 or 3 average ones and a clunker or two.

Co-sign on all the bolded parts, it´s exactly how I feel about that era and those albums.

By the way, speaking of the "original" NPG sound with Michael B. etc. and how it´s missing on NPS and Emancipation....you tell immediately recognize the few tracks on Emancipation that were recorded with the original NPG. Betcha By Golly Wow starts with that typical Michael B. drumsound, and that powerful Sonny T. bass. I know it´s not everybody´s favorite cover version but I love it, and I wish he would´ve kept that band around a bit longer instead of replacing Michael B, Sonny and Tommy with other musicians. Those others were good, too, but nothing comes close to the tightness and energy that the power trio Sonny, Mike and Prince had.

I think some of the songs could be OK if the crowd chants etc were stripped off, just let the musical performances shine through more.

A fun, funky album. Like many I pretty much dismissed it when it came out, but it has aged surprisingly well for me. I absolutely love the title track. But as a whole it holds up. It’s become one of my go-to’s at the gym when I want to stop early.
