Every Prince Album Has One Classic Song!?

Is there a Prince album without a Top 50 (Worthy) Greatest Prince Song? Even his lesser albums have at least one brilliant JAM.

Ur thoughts?

I'm not sure if there's anything on Xpectation that would make my top 50... And I like that album!

“Xpedition” is a jam!

Doubt it will make many people’s top 50, but I’ve always been a sucker for instrumental music like that, so I’m not sure!

There is not a Prince album without at least one or two great songs in it. Even the worst albums.
.
That's why his death is a great loss for music: we will never know the great songs he would have recorded for every album he would have released.

Even in the midst of Prince's muddlings of musical output, there were moments of brilliance that stood out. That's varying degrees of brilliance, mind you. It also depends how you define "classic." That's a term thrown around a lot. I mean, it's really defined as, "judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind." So given that, I suppose most of his albums would have that one track that is memorable or worthy of an extra nod. I think anything after 1996 would get into murky waters, really trying to find that one song.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

“Time” is potentially Top 50 material. “U Know” is another Jam.

Disagree. 1996+ Albums have a boatload of underrated great songs. Ppl make the mistake of comparing his 79-88 Genius Period with the rest of his catalogue. That is unfair...that was one of the greatest creative runs in pop music history and shouldn’t diminish the great music that followed.

There are a bunch of tracks that could have made Top 50 on AOA.

When I saw the thread title, 20Ten was the album that came to my mind that lacked an obvious ‘classic’ track for me. So I’d be interested to hear people’s suggestions for that one.

Hi Jdcxc,

.

In my subjective opinion I would say 'no', but if you disagree I'd be interested to hear which songs you'd suggest.

'Future Soul Song' and 'Beginning Endlessly' would be my two contenders. They're among his strongest later work in my estimation. Obviously though, these kind of perceptions are always highly subjective.

True. It's interesting to see AOA mentioned, as that one's got a lot of contenders for top 50 or at least top 100 Prince, for me. "The Breakdown", "Gold Standard", "Clouds"... pretty much his Gold Experience of the 2010s, IMO.

Subjectivity is the fun of these debates. Lol
I wud also add Act of God and Sticky Like Glue as potential Top 50 material...they bubble around my list.

Here are a FEW of my Top 50 from “lesser” albums. I define “Lesser” as albums that were not well received from fanbase, critics OR consumers.

Dark (Come)
Dinner With Delores (Chaos)
Dionne (The Truth)
When the Lights Go Down (Vault)
It’s About That Walk (Vault)
Avalanche (One Nite)
U Make My Sun Shine (Chocolate)
2045 Radical Man (Slaughterhouse)

The only albums I'd struggle with are The Slaugtherhouse, TCI and NEWS.

Even Planet Earth has Somewhere On Earth and Plectrum has Anotherlove.

Art Official has Clouds and U Know which are top tier to me. Slaughterhouse has Daisy Chain, Chocolate Invasion has When Eye lay My Hands, Plectrum has WOW, the jazz stuff aren't pop albums so don't count...

MPLSound though... Old Skool Company maybe? Seriously struggle with that album. Maybe one of the ballads.

I, personally, wouldn't put any of the 4 tracks on "N.E.W.S." in my top 100, let alone top 50.

I’d certainly say Ol’ Skool Company, and Dance 4 Me, could be classed as ‘top tier.’
.
I couldn’t say the same about The Daisy Chain though but that’s just my opinion

I slept on the Daisy Chain for the longest time, i love it now though. I dont think coming last on a fairly drab album helped. Northside is good as well, Prince was still playing that one years later.

Dance 4 Me... yeah i dunno, its alright, I don't think ive ever WANTED to hear it though. Maybe I'll come round to it in time.

I have been really into 2045 Radical Man and Dance 4 Me of late. When 2045 kicks into that funky gear it’s intoxicating...one of his few songs that fully realizes his many funk/hip hop/jazz horned experiments.

Listening to it now... its been a while! I hear what you're saying, i think its just not my kind of style. Its cool that some people dig it though, I know for sure there's stuff i love that others on here roll their eyes at.

I’ve always liked Radical Man. Those keys and bits of Camille like vocals are a joy

It’s hard to compare jazz/funk instrumentals with pop songs. But I do love Madhouse 8 and NEWS is cool.

I'm not comparing anything. Any Prince album should be judged on its own, since they are all so different. But that's also the problem, though. 1996 was a time mark, not a comparison of different decades. It was a falling off, for me. His music started to mesh together. Nothing stands out.(3121 and Planet Earth is practically a 2-CD album, as an example.) And while there are nice songs on most albums in this time period, nothing is "classic".

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
