elephants and flowers....

I first heard the unreleased version just this week on the 'The work' bootleg and I have two questions about this great version:

- Are there any lyrics to this version available on the net? I tried to find them but I only found the lyrics to the released version.

- At the end of the song, it seems to fade into either another song or another structure but just after it does, the song is cut short. Is there a longer version available on another boot?

There used to be a really great site called 'The Data Bank Transcription Team' who actually attempted to transcribe every single Prince song that was released, unreleased, and stretched to include the lyrics of songs by associated artists as well. DTT were definitely meticulous and thorough; even going to the trouble of transcribing songs' little asides, whispered words, mannerisms and segues (including coughs) - and even went as far as to offer translations of verses pasages if they were in a different language.

Sadly, the DTT are now history...

I am not aware of a longer demo of 'Elephants And Flowers' doing the rounds at this moment.

Your right. I usally listen to the version on Mirror ball and that sounds like it fades out early cos Prince starts singing / rapping something like '98 in the dark, DJ on the race car' or something. I'm not sure if it's the same on the Work. I'll see how that version ends later.

What you refer to are the vestiges of another track meant for the aborted 'The Dawn' project, the 'West Side Story' type of film that ended up mutating into 'Graffiti Bridge' instead.

Two unreleased songs that come to mind from this project are 'When The Dawn Of The Morning Comes' and 'Coco Boys'.

My guess is that 'Elephants And Flowers' was originally intended to segue into 'Coco Boys', but this is just an assumption since both unreleased songs are not circulating in any shape or form yet.

Wow, very interesting thread, I really like that The Dawn version. This another one of those fascinating Prince periods along with the Dream Factory/Crystal Ball/Camille era and Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic (88).

I thought that E&F was an outtake from Rave?

This was a great Lyric site! When I wanted to know what Prince was saying at the beginning of "Le Grind" that where I went.

This is cool but, the original DTT had the lyrics to outtakes and unreleased songs to.

ELEPHANTS & FLOWERS

Boy is lonely on a burnin’ hot summer night
Car door slams, out jumps Coco in a dress so tight
The likeness of Jesus on her leather coat
She’s 2 smart 4 ecstasy, she's 2 fast 4 coke
She takes the boy by the hand
The only thing he understands
Is that she wants him on the dancefloor

Elephants & Flowers

Hot sweaty light paints a picture red & gold
On their just turned 18 year old bodies super-bold
Scream & dance 4 12 hours to the new power soul
No sex, no drugs, no devil here, just good old rock & roll

Elephants & Flowers

Love the one who is love
The one who gives us the power
The one who made everything
Elephants & Flowers
The one who will listen when all others will not
There will be peace 4 those who love God a lot

Elephants & Flowers
Elephants & Flowers

No confusion, no tears
No enemies, no fear
No sorrow, no pain
No ball, no chain
Sex is not love, Love is not sex
Putting words in other people’s mouths
Won’t get U elected.
Don’t kiss me, just talk 2 me
Don’t kiss me, just talk 2 me

Love the one who is love
The one who gives us the power
The one who made everything
Elephants & Flowers
The one who will listen when all others will not
There will be peace 4 those who love God a lot

Elephants & Flowers
Elephants & Flowers

98 in the dark
The DJ own the race car
He tried 2 put in in 'park'
But he won't get far

And, incidentally, the best versions of this demo can be found on both 'Take It 2 The Bridge'(3:38 ) and 'Mirrorball'(3:41), of course. wink
