Well good on ya for having enough guts to put your thoughts out there!! biggrin It can be a vicious and crazy place - this "Org" world confused I've experienced it first-hand. Don't let it deter you!!

Oh, forgot to mention - it seems you are a younger fan since you mentioned you became familiar with the SOTT time period via the Biography. Some of the older fans here who were around during that time tend to get impatient with younger folks who are giving opinions or asking questions. I am an older fan, but not one to go on the “attack”. SOTT was pretty big back then and well received, although U2’s Joshua Tree beat out Prince for best album.

Well, thanks! And, yeah, certainly a youngER fan, though longtime at this point: since October/November 2004!

1987 was quite a year in music: Prince, MJ, U2, and then there was Terence Trent D’Arby’s Introducing the Hardline!

It was a fantastic year for sure!! I attended U2’s Joshua Tree concert in DC and it was amazing. Just phenomenal. I wasn’t into MJ as much after the ‘83-‘85 period as I was in college and getting more into the alt music scene. Still loved Prince though smile

jaawwnn

No filler on the album, even the songs cut from Crystal Ball to make SOTT are top-shelf, although I think the album flows better as SOTT.

OK, so I think my taste when it comes to Prince is a bit unusual, but we'll see.

SoTT is a classic for a reason, but honestly around half of it just drags the thing down, IMO.
If the tracklist were as below (though not necessarily in that order), the album would be fine from front to back:

SoTT
Play in the Sunshine
The Ballad of Dorothy Parker
It
Starfish and Coffee
U Got the Look
The Cross

It's not that some of the other songs are really bad, they are just kind of dull and/or go on too long, especially "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night". But "Adore" and "If I Was Your Girlfriend" are among the worst of Prince! They are pretty darn popular from what I gather though.

What do you think? And what would you cut?

Geez, I thought you must be a newbie for sure. Was surprised to learn otherwise.

I wouldn't cut a damn thing from his album. It's a masterpiece and pure genius!

If I was your girlfriend is one of my top 5 Prince songs. You need to get your shit together neutral

I think he/she is a “newbie” in terms of not being around during the 80’s and first discovering Prince’s music in 2004. That’s quite new compared to someone who was actually there in ‘87 and has been a fan since ‘80.

Well, Gold Nigga or Exodus would have been better choices for song bashing biggrin

Yeah, never really was able to listen to those albums in full, but “Hallucination Rain” is one mighty fine song. Glad there’s an 11 min version!
