Did anyone hear manage to attend the BBC Radio 1 session he did prior to the Wembley Arena show in 93?

It was 20mins of pure energy which, possibly for the first time in history, meant the awful Simon Bates' morning show was essential listening...

The first of three gigs that day - after the Wembley show he did the Bagleys aftershow (not so great for the spectator!)...

I'd be interested in hearing from what the show was like for those in attendance...

I was listening to the show the other day, and it reminded me of what was a great day...even though i didn't manage to get tickets to the Beeb event...and that air was in short supply at Bagleys!

the organisation was shite, which meant the main hall he played in was absolutely stiffling, with only one door to get in and out...was dangerous...plus loads of people couldn't even gain access to the show as they blocked entry.

ALSO, it was supposed to be themed in an egyptian style...but that seemed only to stretch to some sand being chucked on the ground...

i was not at the show but i heard it live on the radio. p did a fab version of the pope. sadly i lost the tape i copied it on to.

It was a blazing set alright! 20minutes @ 1000mph.

Im still haunted by that debacle at Bagleys. Personally, I would've been happy if he had called it off that nite - it's not as if people could've rioted - there was hardly room 2 fart, let alone swing your arms about!
Man, that was just a bad, bad, experience - it should never have turned out theway it did. SO dangerous.
I spent the entire show propped up against the far wall stood on a couple of plastic bottles - such was the limited floorspace! *shudders*
BBC gig was waaay cool =)

The Bagley show on video looked very uncomfortable so I can imagine how horrible it must have been to be there.
I think that was also the last straw for Eileen Murton & the Controversy fanzine. Something about Prince's organization went behind her back to get names/name list to start their own NPG magazine.
I might have my facts wrong but it was something along those lines.

Yeah - watching the video was more fun than being there - TRUST me onthat one!

As 4 Controversy, well that was part of it, amongst many other factors - but yeah, in a nutshell, Eileen felt betrayed, and that all she had sacrificed (ie: her job!) and worked so hard along with her unpaid staff 2 achieve was being belittled.

Not 2 mention that the close ties that had been formed with many folks at Paisley over the years were now rapidly dwindling due 2 major sweeping staff changes. Because of these bad experiences the previous couple of months, (and coming 2 a head with the incidents on that tour) Eileen felt she just couldnt rely on these 'loose cannons'.

Hey - maybe I should write a book!

In hindsight, I know she did it 4 the right reasons, and I respect her 4 wanting 2 ensure that the positive legacy of Controversy was left intact. I still miss it tho. But as she said then - there is no reason why friendships can't continue - and Ive made some great friends thru that mag - a handful in particular that I consider, CLOSE, life-long friendships. So Eileen this is 4 U - wherever u are:
