1999 Live Official Video (Live at The Summit, Houston, TX, 12/29/1982)

Man, that pumped me up more than a thousand cups of Java!

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure
Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams
Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose
Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams

Oof. That picture quality is rough. I wonder how much of Prince's career was captured using similar, or worse than, tape technology.

The performance and audio are top notch though. Very cool to see this.

Ummm...pretty much all of it? Welcome to 1982.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

"Top notch" audio? There's a massive echo in the left channel.

They just released the audio for "1999", Live at Masonic Hall, Detroit, on streaming platforms. It's a very nice soundboard recording. cool

I don't mind a raw soundboard recording with zero overdubs and "clean ups". Not at all. As long as it's a direct transmission from the board with no degregation or damage to the tapes.

I say, KEEP IT RAW.

Love it....

That chicken screatch guitar in the middle of 1999...OH MY LAWD!!!!

Film is (and was) a thing. Queen has some absolutely beautiful concerts from the 80s.
A certain kind of mellow.

I think the Queen shows were professionally shot and staged. Prince's shows - until SOTT - were sort of skeleton crew, last minute efforts with just a few guys taking shots of the show from a couple of angles. There is however a Controversy era pro-shot concert that was filmed and never released called The Second Coming. This is probably closer in quality as the similar era Queen shows we've seen...

We should appreciate it for what it is! It isn’t the best quality but Prince wasn’t recording this to be released to home video. He had this quickly made, as he did with all concerts, so he could go back and watch them to see how well they were doing, any mistakes, etc.
And when you’re recording nonstop, you probably don’t buy the most expensive gear.

Plus this looks much better than the Purple Rain Syracuse crap. That is unwatchable for me. Also I’ll take this over Live at the Alladin dvd

Also, this is sourced probably from a VHS Prince had at his home. They most likely weren’t able to get in touch with the camera crew from back in the day who would may or may not still have the original sources

I agree. This is far superior to the Purple Rain Syracuse show. That show suffered from awful picture quality.

yes nod

Technical aspects aside (as Genesia said, welcome to 1982), it's the sheer energy of it that stuns me.

Such a breath of fresh air to look at 25 year old Prince getting closer to a full posession of his showmanship.

Seeing him smile so much is both heartbreaking and exhilarating.

.

This is a multi-camera recording. The cost of doing that for every concert in an era where this wouldn't even be used on video screens would be ridiculous. This is a pro recording stored on a VHS tape and encoded from that, instead of from a professional source.

I got amped up when I saw it on my Youtube feed. I had to check my collection and I have this complete concert on dvd and it looks about the same quality. Amazing how VHS in the early 80's is what 4k HD is now. I'm happy we are able to get some vault material. Now all the Estate has to do for me is put out rehersal videos footage from the 80's.

It's there. Go to "EP & singles" then scroll to the bottom and it's the last file...
