What happens if Prince didn’t change his name in 1993....

Does his commercial appeal and chart success still drop?

Thoughts?

Not as much. The name change and assless pants had the gen pub forgetting about the genius of the music and he became the disrespectful term wacko jacko of the 90's.

Interesting question. I don't think much would have changed. Maybe Gold Experience and Emancipation would have had a greater impact. But after that I can't see much else changing. The lyrics to "Call My Name" might have been a bit different 😂😂

Not sure, he definitely wouldn't have been made as much fun off. Now, if he decided to work out a deal with Warner Brothers where he could get the rights to his masters over time and had some effort put into Paisley Park to be a real label instead of the place to put out his alter ego music and some bands his office workers liked...

.

And stopped chasing trends and just made music on his terms.. he would have been the critics darling and would be much more profitable then he was/is.

Don’t get how it didn’t make a big difference. I lived through that period as a big fan, in the uk it was pretty hard work following him. Even with the touring he did over Europe. The media coverage he got was pretty terrible at the time,Come Exudus etc were badly reviewed and covered in the media. And his music stoped being played on the radio. It was harsh! So yes, it did make a big difference! In 93 he was playing a packed Wembley stadium. Less then 2 years later he couldn’t fill arena dates completely, and was getting stick in the media with that show and from the general public because it wasn’t a hits show! So yea! You can say it made a difference! Even though his sales were going down,he was still a major player at the time before the Warner’s Change name period.

The name change did not lead to lack of commercial appeal or chart success. The premise of the thread is nonsense.

He didn't change his name as much as stopped using it lol

If Prince didn't change his name in 1993 it would be so much easier to do an internet search on things Prince related in that 1993-1999 time period. Typing in 'The Artist' creates chaos & disorder

i am sorry...but are you of this planet? Can you provide me album sales AFTER the name change? Let's not be dumb here. Prince was coming off some of his most commerical stuff in 91&92, i am sure it would of faded...but did changing his name speed that up? Wait. Nevermind. Don't need anymore comments for a nonsense thread!

Not sure, but the live concerts would have surely been extremely different than they were during that time.

I don't think the actual name change impacted things as much as the friction with WB and going independent. If he'd had the full support of a major label, he would of had a lot more radio play, chart success, etc regardless of his name.

Jeez, the name change and trouble with warners go hand in hand, thats the reason he changed his name, nothing to do with his own self, it wasnt like Cassus clay to ali! It was everything to do with the breakdown with warners. Bloody hell!

His commercial appeal and chart success dropped because 1) he was putting out boring music and 2) he didn't have a label to dump millions into promo.

The name change didn't do a damn thing. If he was kicking out hit-worthy songs that were fully promoted (and that he fully promoted), he would've seen success.

Prince was pretty much never promoting his actual records out at the time for more than like 2 weeks. He went through albums like he went through women.

As i said , the name change and the dispute with warners are pretty much the same thing. Both made a huge difference, like i said , i remember that period really well! Im not going to go on about it any more! Because i know what im talking about!

Wow. Thanks for the history lesson in all things obvious. razz The original post/question is only talking about the name change to prince. A lot of the general public knew he changed his name without knowing any of his WB drama. So, while the two are obviously connected, that's not what this the original poster was asking....

Cool beans.

Anyway, if he had not changed his name and still had the dispute which led to lack of promo and him releasing subpar material, he still would've suffered. The name change was theatrics. Everyone still called him Prince unless to mock him and they were mocking him before that anyway.

Prince promoted Come and The Gold Experience pretty well, although he claims Come to be "old material". Prince only scored a few minor/major hits under the Love Symbol, most notably "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" (which keeps getting excused out of lists of Camilie songs). Someone else said above that his post-1994 music would have a bigger impact if he didn't start using the Love Symbol, and I agree.

Anyone who thinks that whole TAFKAP/The Artist era, or having people like Kirstie Alley holding up an actual Symbol to introduce him didn't have an effect on his impact as a viable commercial artist clearly was not around during that time. You had people like Arsenio Hall clowning him on his talk show, along with tons of other negative reactions from the general public. So, it is pretty obvious that if he hadn't changed his name, we wouldn't have had to deal with any of the nonsense that followed when he did. It would have been a completely different Prince World. Unfortunately, one can only imagine...

What wouldn't have happened is his club Glam Slam. Which was a dream come true to go party there with him in attendance at any given day.

If he didn't change his name we would not have had the 1999 New master

51HX45NZHEL.jpg

PAPER * JUNE 1999

artist 2000

BY BETH COLEMAN

.

1999 the New Masters was released in February on the Artist's label, New Power Generation. The seven remixes of the classic jam (which was also re-released by Warner Bros. late last year) were not well received by jaded critics. Prince biographer Jon Bream wrote of the release, "[The Artist] is now as far out of touch as he was once ahead of the game." Rolling Stone, which had plastered Prince on its cover five times, now mocked the Artist's idea of re-recording his entire catalog.

.

"I wanted to buy my masters back from Warner Bros.," the Artist says of his quest for control. "They said no way. So I'm going to re-record them. All of them." Then he smiles sweetly. "Now you will have two catalogs with pretty much exactly the same music -- except mine will be better -- and you can either give your money to WB, the big company, or to NPG. You choose."

In regards to the name change, all of that could have been avoided at the bargaining table for, what was it? Prince’s third or fourth contract. Take less money to keep your masters and agree to one single album per year or a double album every 18 months or two years. Prince wanted the headline of the biggest record deal thus far and screwed himself. There I said it! He was not a starry eye teen when he signed that deal he should have known better.
