Why was Purple Rain up against Thriller at the AMA's 1985 when Thriller was relased in 1982? In the Best Black Album Category along with Lionel Ritches's: Can't Slow Down. Thriller was released in 1982, so I was wondering why it was competing in 1985, usually the compete if anything the coming year which for Thriller would have been 1983 but here its still competeing in 1985???

I think the Thriller album was released in December 1982, although The Girl Is Mine was released around Summer 1982. So you might as well say it came out in 1983. Thriller was still selling a lot in 1984, maybe more than The Jacksons' Victory which actually came out in 1984. Remember 7 singles were released from Thriller and they couldn't have all been released in 1983. Popular hits got radio airplay for months back then, it's not here today, gone tomorrow like a lot of current hits. The other 2 non-singles also got radio airplay. I still hear The Lady In My Life occasionally on the local adult R&B station. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Yeah back then an album was promoted 2-3 yrs Maybe I should say the big hitters. Tina Turners Private Dancer was 1983-1985
Janet Jacksons Control was 1986-1988
Prince back then rarely went over a year.

a very different world back then. artists would tour for 2 years on a hit album releasing singles the whole time. now most artists are extremely lucky if they get 2 months of life out of an album.

Thriller was the best selling album of 1984, so yeah. Makes sense to me given how the AMAs are conducted. A certain kind of mellow.
