When will Piano & A Microphone Live 2016 be released?

  • This performance became Prince's final public appearance and performance before his death at Paisley Park Studios four days later.
  • This was advertised as a Dance party. Pam The Funkstress played a DJ set. At some point Prince came on stage and played two tracks on his new custom purple Yamaha piano that was set up on stage. He also showed the crowd a new purple guitar which had not been seen before, although he did not play it. Afterwards he cued some 30 minutes of the Atlanta 10 p.m. Piano & A Microphone show and said it was from a forthcoming live release of a Piano & A Microphone album. Black Sweat from that show was released on Tidal the following day, marking the final official release by Prince during his lifetime.

When do you think this will be Released?

P&M in some kind of configuration should've been released shortly after his death.

But since no one in this estate seems interested in logic and reason...

You're gonna have to rely on bootlegs of these shows for now. I believe the estate is more focused on older material as of late.

Probably not. Who knows the quality of any recording that exists of it, anyway. I still think the existing PAAM release is a possible setup for future releases in the same fashion (and possibly Originals being a similar blueprint for its own series).

It's certainly not something we'd see every year, but every 3 or 4 years would be cool... if my theory pans out.

Also, if they ever considered releasing it I would think they'd want some space between 2016 and whenever it comes out. That "last recording" is precious stuff, and if I were running it, I'd wait a while, put some other stuff out, create a sense of status quo or regularity, then pounce with this when everyone least expected it.

I'm so glad I found one of the Atlanta shows, the first show I believe. And also one from Sydney. It's deeply personal and intimate. Even if they release these versions, I may pick them up if they're good quality but I'm happy with what I have so far.

I also found the Hawaii 2003 shows, it brought back memories and I do treasure all these. sad

It's even crazier because, in the police photos, you could clearly see a USB stick marked "ATLANTA" on his nightstand in the green room he was using as a bedroom.

It's complete and ready for release. All they have to do is let it fly.

The Paisley Park gigs were mixed the next days - I was on a studio tour and saw them being done so they are ready for sure and sounded awesome. The video is alsoready to go but is not being released for whatever reason. These are the ones that should be released as where more personal than any of the shows that followed. I spoke to Jon Bream after the show sad I was so blown away by Prince discussing his life - he felt the same and wondered if the rest of the tour would be so personal, neither of us thought they would be and listening to the boots they werent

How do you pick out which show(s) to release!?
Most of the shows were so different setlist wise.

The show in Melbourne on the day that Vanity passed away was pretty emotionally charged and would be awesome to hear again.

So many shows where he played songs which weren’t performed at others. And so much different banter. Like I said..... how do you pick which one to release. confused

Didn't he share memories of his childhood and his father's influence?

Well, the dream would be a Piano & A Microphone boxset or digital release.

Show 1 & 2 of the Paisley Gala, Show 1 & 2 from the day of Vanity's passing, Show 1 & 2 of the final Atlanta show. And maybe include a Blu-Ray of show 1 from Paisley Gala.

That doesn't seem that extravagant. Each show was about 85-95 minutes long.

Or maybe do Volumes. Paisley Gala = Volume 1, Vanity show = Volume 2, Atlanta = Volume 3

Many/most of the P&M shows are out there if you know where to look wink

*

They are all fantastic, in particular, the first PP show Jan 2016, several of the Australia shows, the Oakland shows, and of course the last show in Atlanta.

That's the thing, thanks to so many, we don't have to wait 20 more years to hear them...

I was amazed listening to the January 21st P&M shows at PP - especially the first show. He was telling his story chronologically through his words and songs. Very touching, and literally seems to be his musical autobiography.

*

I was surprised when, before he played The Beautiful Ones, he stated, "Some singers have the courage to tell you, and if they're male don't let them lie to you. They ALL write songs to "cop" girls."

It seemed that he was acknowledging the long-held story of the inspiration behind that song.

*

He must have been in a deeply emotional place that night.

I have snippets of some of the other P&M shows, summer good quality, some not so good but I'll keep them until I find better quality. I appreciate any little bit I can find.

It seems like there's an unhealthy obsession on part of the Estate to exclusively focus on his 80s output...Love thy will be Done on Originals excluded..seem we have Jay Z. to thank for at least including one 90s song.

I also hope we'll see P&M released one day but I'm not counting on it...too much unreleased 80s stuff to get to first...

I was under the impression there was some legal reason why more recent stuff could not yet be released?

Yes and it's always the 81 - 85 output and nothing from 86 - 89

Actually, he didn't record all his shows... Some small venues were not recorded by him at all, including the last ones I saw in 2014. So far, bootleggers didn't either... sad

I'd never heard before that he didn't record all of his shows. He was known for listening back to his shows later that night, to see what needed to be changed.

Where did you hear this?

Two possible reasons:

1) It's been shown repeatedly at Celebration. Both 2017 and 2018, but not 2019. I saw a large chunk of it in 2018. So, maybe Paisley Park want to keep it to only be shown there or have an agreement for that.

2) It's heartbreaking to watch. I suspect even more so than when it happened. The pro-shot close up videos make it damn obvious how frail he was. His eyes were glazed in parts. There was just no light left in him, except for the odd moments when the spark came back as he reminisced on certain songs.

Musically, it's brilliant to hear. Watching it is tough, much like the Michael Jackson "This Is It" film, which was heavily edited to try and hide the fact that he was gaunt.
