I Wanna Be Your Lover-Selena Gomez Instagram Post

I was looking through the list of Prince vids on Youtube and came across this song and noticed it had over 8 million views. I was a little surprised because last I checked it had no where near that amount, so I had to be curious and see what was with the surge of views. Well lo and behold, apparently Selena Gomez was on her instagram page and posted herself roller skating to this song and then many of her followers called "Selenators" were in the comments section saying things like, "I am here because Selena said it is a great song", "Queen Selena sent me here", "If Selena says listen to this song, then I am going to listen", "Who's here because of Selena?", etc. Not sure if many of her followers knew or know anything about Prince, but I think it is cool to see them at least get a little interest and that she chose a song that was very early in his career and not PR related. I just think it is great anytime he gets noticed, especially to the younger generation. cool biggrin

As a long time Prince fan, it sometimes hard to imagine that there are some out there that doesn't know his music or love it, because we that love him and know the greatness that was Prince, just can't imagine that there are some out there that doesn't! lol

I was going to post this last week, there was a small article online about it.

The day she made her post about it, I Wanna Be Your Lover also went back on the top songs for the itunes charts for a short period, a few hours.

Me too! In 2002 I was outside a venue for the ONA tour when a boy came up to me. He asked why we were standing there. I said we were waiting to see Prince. He then looked at me with only questionmarks above his head. Then I said it was a concert from the man of Purple Rain and then he looked at me as if he was witnessing the stranding of a whale on the beach. He then just walked on, leaving me with that same look in my eyes.

I kinda agree but I would rather have sincere people discover Prince and not some insincere millennial generation z fan that only listened to it because selena gomez had it on her instagram post and will probably never listen to him again unless selena, taylor, or cardi b. post something about Prince.

How are you gonna measure sincerity in someone's discovery and enjoyment of music? What does that even mean? lol I mean, who cares if they heard a song on a pop star's instagram or had records passed down by their parents... as long as they're digging a Prince song, that's all that really matters. Generational gatekeeping is a bunch of nonsense and just turns young folks off of things they have every right to enjoy on their own terms.

Mikado

I Wanna Be Your Lover is actually one of the most popular Prince songs on Spotify and other streaming services. Sorta weird to see what gains traction with some people vs others.

A certain kind of mellow.

-

...well there are people out there who've never heard of Prince.

-

Girl i know, 16 now, (was nearly 13 when he died in april 2016,) never heard about him.

Prince wasn't all that much in the news back then for years as eitherl, remember ?

Only fans, musicians-musicians, the music industry, and old timers like myself (people born before 1970) know who he is/or might be here in 2019.

-

He will be forgotten. How sad this might sound to anyone here, it's just the way it goes.

And that's also how it should be... in some decades to come he will be (for the best maybe) some footnote in music history.

Don't forget, pop and rock is something from the second half of the past century. Not so old though.

And will be replaced once too.

There will always be (old and new) music and new stars, but all is temporary and replaceable.

So does Prince, so do we.

Pop and rock and it's artists, will eventually and possibly become a niche in music history.

Though I hope it's going to stay and continue or further develloped for the next 35 years or so, before i'm dead and gone. wink)

Lizzo already had an album out by the time they worked together, and approximately 0.0% of her current buzz/attention/fame has to do with Prince.

Also: Boytrouble fucking sucks.

I actually read that IWBYL popped back into the charts purely because of her Insta post.

Thank you! That explains why I didn’t hear it as I wasn’t a fan of the album. I’ll check it out smile

Not crazy, but simply normal.
Selena is hot now. And how old is she ? Under 25 ?
Prince was hot in the eighties,
died more than 3 years go, and should be over 60 now.

True, Seems like these days it is more about how many social media followers someone has than the actual quality of the music/artistry itself.

I will never understand or get the whole "social media followers" thing. lol......Doesn't anyone actually think for themselves anymore, and just have and use their own minds, instead of seeming to be led around like blind sheep to a slaughter, following the same trends and actions of others, all the same? I'm serious, I honestly just don't get the social media mob or "followers" as they call themselves! lol

What are you thanking her for, it's not like she's doing Prince any favors! He was already very well established, very loved, and well known before Selena, you know......I guess you do, since I Wanna Be Your Lover was your first vinyl in 1978. lol
