Songs By Other Artists That Prince Privately Adored...

"Privately adored" in that the general public didn't know he liked the song because he never covered it live very much and didn't rave about it in the press...ala, A CASE OF YOU...

Here are some...

DRIVE by THE CARS - Supposedly, according to Wendy & Lisa, he loved this song and liked to play it while...well, driving around Minneapolis...

ONCE IN A LIFETIME by THE TALKING HEADS - during soundchecks during the 1999 tour he'd frequently intersperse bits of this song within others during FONKY improvisations to great effect.

LUKE by SUZANNE VEGA - Prince wrote her a private note in the mid 80s saying how much he loved the song.

THE WHOLE OF THE MOON by THE WATERBOYS - Ironic that Prince played this fantastic song live a few times and that it's rumored that the song was actually inspired by him! Specifically, the follow-up to PURPLE RAIN being the song's heroes "Flying too high to the Sun" moment....

What are the others?

Karma Chameleon by Culture Club. Boy George claimed someone in the Prince campe told him that he thought Karma Chameleon was "bad"

Addicted to Love Robet Palmer. I recall U Got the Look was his attempt to have a hit song with this song as inspiration. Obviously the songs are quite different, but this song was a starting off point.

When Susan Vega performed her song at an award show, Prince was the first to stand up and give her a standing ovation. it is on youtube somewhere. SInce this song is about abuse, it makes me wonder if Prince just responded to the message or it related to his life - Papa erc.

Assume this means good/bad as per the thread title and not bad/bad? lol

Yes that is right. I put the quotes round this to show it was actually a quote, and also to show it was the slang bad which means good or cool. A bit hard to tell sometime when just written.

Someone said he liked the Foo Fighters, Led Z. He seemed to cover "Play That Funky Music, White Boy" more than once.

He may have admired some of RadioHead's stuff; he covered "Creep" at Coachella.

"Love is a Losing Game" by Amy W.

He recorded his own version of Katie Melua's "If You Were a Sailboat" (with altered lyrics) so i'm guessing he was pretty fond of that song

Definitely Amy Winehouse. However in the new article about his autobiography in the New Yorker, The author Dan says that Prince described something about the lead singer of Led Z’s screams being what I took to mean as “evil”. And he was right. There is something very evil about a lot of rock ‘n’ roll. But not Prince’s singing.

Just My Imagination. I LOVE his versions on the Lovesexy rehearsals ‘Sitting In This Cafe, Waiting For My Baby.’ . Hoping for a studio version one day. 💜

He played "Whole Lotta Love" a number of times on tour (Led Z)

I somehow feel he may have admired Jeff Beck's guitar skills.

I hear it nod "Baby's in love with radio" (where he shouted out couple of folks including Prince) came through the shuffle while I was driving to work the other day, and thought to myself there's no way Prince wasn't influenced by Johnny's rhythm guitar playing.
