That is beautiful. Thanks. I didn't know Prince had chosen this. His face. And, btw, the intricately embellished jacket. The moon phases shirt. Is he wearing a necklace of some sort? I wanted to enlarge the picture but due to issues with my puter, can't risk doing that.

I like the photo that will be on the jacket/cover, too. Both pics bookmark his career, so it feels like both would be good choices. Expectant and young vs. refined and realized. Maybe this could appear on the back?!

Some random things I found interesting in the article:

Prince driving Piepenbring back to his hotel. How many "celebs" would do that?

Talking about his parents, saying his dad was his best friend. Saying he was thinking of writing about his mom and her role in his life.

Miles Davis believed in only two categories of thinking...

That was one of the things that stood out for me along with his parents & Black Wall Street. He was kinda blunt with the writer too & to his credit he could’ve declined to pursue the project with Prince. If the interview is any indication of what’s to come, then I’m glad. And like somebody said in the podcast juice, this memoir is gonna upset alooooot of people. I can’t wait.

Thanks for posting that and reminding me again Hamad, I will check that out. Imagine Prince and Miles having a conversation? Both so funny and dry. One of my favorite Miles quotes - I'm not racist, I've got white motherfuckers in my band.

That is his last Passport Photo,

Prince suggested that the entire page in his passport could be the cover...

I think its such a cool idea, along with that pic..we would see all his details, height DOB eye colour etc...

anyway..

they are going with those ancient history pics instead..

I like the photo of him photographing himself too. Both great photos. Maybe it's because he only made 30 pages. The writing had barely begun.

*Thanks, I did go back and reread the article from New Yorker, was trying not to read it again until book complete, and I see the passport talk:

(Copied below)
He’d recently had a new passport photo taken, which he’d tweeted. It had gone viral. Of course it had: his lips in a gentle pout, his eyeliner immaculate, every hair in his mustache trimmed to perfection, he seemed to be daring the customs officials of the world to give him a kiss instead of a stamp. He said, “Maybe we should have that on the cover, with all my info and stuff. We need this to get weird.” We were both laughing, exhilarated.

From what the article says, there were 30 handwritten pages and a couple of meetings. Sketches of an unfinished project, no collaborative writing had begun. Prince told Piepenbring they would really get into it at a later date that never arrived.

30?!! I read that there were 50... This will be padded as fuck. Even 50 handwritten pages end up as nothing after they are typed...

That's what it said unless it was a typo. I'm thinking the same thing about the padding. They didn't even have a chance to formally go over what Prince wrote together.

Right. 3/4's of it will have been written by someone else. It also seems, as others have said, Prince's own handwritten notes may not have had any main theme or consistency to them. Nonetheless, it will be great to read the thoughts that he put on paper.

So far no reviews in the latest issues of UK music monthlies like Mojo, Uncut or Q Magazine. (Considering that these publications usually only feature a handful of book reviews (at most), there's a good chance it won't even feature next month.)

"The Beautiful Ones" by Prince (Oct. 29)

.

Of course Prince's posthumous memoir wouldn't be like anyone else's. The iconic and multitalented musician's book consists of four parts, framed by authorized writer Dan Piepenbring's research: First, lyrical musings about his journey; second, a scrapbook of photos and writings; third, images showing his self-creation; leading up to the fourth and final section, his treatment for "Purple Rain."

From AFP: https://www.thejakartapos...-fall.html

.

Five music memoirs hitting bookstores this fall

.

"The Beautiful Ones" by Prince, out on Oct. 29

.

Prince announced his first-ever memoir a few weeks before his unexpected death in April 2016, leaving behind more than 50 handwritten pages.

.

Three years later, the unfinished autobiography, titled "The Beautiful Ones," is finally hitting bookstores across the world.

.

"The Beautiful Ones," which is divided in four parts, spans his childhood in Minnesota to his final days as one of the most successful musicians in pop history.

.

Publisher Random House has described the memoir as "the deeply personal account of how Prince Rogers Nelson became the Prince we know," teasing that it narrates "the real-time story of a kid absorbing the world around him and creating a persona... before the hits and the fame that would come to define him".

.

"The Beautiful Ones" also features Prince's unfinished manuscript, behind-the-scenes photos, as well as scrapbooks and lyrics, including his original treatment for his 1984 hit, "Purple Rain."

.

It includes an introduction by New Yorker writer Dan Piepenbring, who was originally chosen to co-write the autobiography.

.

"The Beautiful Ones" is listed at $30.00, with pre-orders already available.

Again with the 50 or 30 handwritten pages discrepancy. Another Price mystery, or people copying other press releases?

I liked the idea of framing the memoir as a kind of handbook. It was a way to expand its remit, giving another layer of meaning to the title, “The Beautiful Ones,” which could denote an entire community of creators.

.

.

Love the article in The New Yorker. Thanks to Bart for sharing. Prince had/has a great spirit.

.

Another thing about Prince choosing the title The Beautiful Ones for his memoir...

.

Back in the mid to late 90s when many of us were on AOL (America Online) [even Compuserve and Prodigy before that, along with the "pre-internet" a.m.p. usenet group], Prince was working directly with fans (via online chatrooms, emails, and IMs) on the Love4OneAnother site, and there was a small group of us who Prince (and sometimes Mayte) checked in with (cf. "My Computer") to see how things were going, play ideas off of, talk spiritual, etc. The thought came up about what we should call ourselves, not just us but others like us who sort of bonded with each other and thought in similar waves.

.

We weren't just "The Collective" (as some called those who worked with him on the website) -- it went beyond that, to include artistic types ("we r all the rtist" as "The Artist" would say) or just others who enjoyed his spiritual wordplay and expanding on the ideas he would put forth, plus it was never meant to be exclusionary. In a way, this was an AOL precursor to what would eventually become The Holy River chatroom. On AOL, Prince would create a private room and invite people to chat with him there, or join in on the public chatrooms, one devoted to him, and other spiritual ones. And yes, it was almost always very late at night, usually around 2am MPLS time.
.
I can't remember if it was in a response to something Prince asked or just something we all started talking about, but I remember saying, "Why don't we call ourselves The Beautiful Ones?" (in reference to being spiritually connected, "beauty-filled," using, of course, the title to the Prince song). Remember at this time Prince was into a lot of spiritual books, The Celestine Prophecy being one of his biggest inspirations at the time; this was 2-3 years before he started getting into the Jehovah Witness religion.

.

Anway, it was Kathy aka opnmind (credited in the New Power Soul liner notes) who said something like "The Beautiful Ones" sounded too pretentious and exclusionary, making it look like we were separating ourselves as appearing better than others. I totally understood what she meant, not that any of us would think that of ourselves, but that the title could come across poorly to others. I forget what other things we came up with, but I'm pretty sure we didn't settle on any particular name before The Holy River chatroom was created on Prince's own L4OA site and eventually the NPGMC site, which too allowed for private IMs with "certain" people and the ability to create and invite people into private chatrooms, much like AOL.

.

So it's my belief, when Prince came up with the title The Beautiful Ones for his memoir, it's not so much in reference to his song of the same name, but it's because of how he saw all of you, his fans, all of us together, spiritually, artistically, and so on. We are The Beautiful Ones ("an entire of community of creators." i.e. "we r all the rtist").

.

By the way, "One Song" [aka "Uni-Verse"] (the whole 9 minute piece) is a culmination of that period, written "by" and "for" his fans. It's why he closed L4OA and left it there for months (nothing else) when NPGMC became the new site.

.

Peace + much Love 2 all

"As I read more about his last months, it was hard to reconcile the sunny, puckish, solicitous man I met with the one described in news stories and police reports, who could be unyielding, furtive, and willfully opaque. Prince had always embodied dualities. Here was one more: he had told me that he was O.K., and he was not O.K. There was nothing false in the way he spoke to me, and nothing false in the way he spoke during his darkest moments. I can’t think less of him for hiding his pain. He was living on his own terms. To expect anything more of him would have been to expect magic."

The last paragraph of Dan's article sums P up perfectly.

It does. 'Magic' is an interesting last word in the context of the article too. Magic ism't real. I wish it was.
