The German Blu-ray of the Sign O' The Times movie + its 90 minute documentary "Prince - The Peach & Black Times"

Previous threads: https://prince.org/msg/7/458895 (thread 1) and https://prince.org/msg/7/459742 (thread 2). Please read those before coming here, since these contain all the info you need.

.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

.

Edgar Kruize has shared pictures of the dummy of the box set: https://twitter.com/Edgar...2072159232

.

Mock-up of the booklet: https://twitter.com/Edgar...5446598658

.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

.

And in this month's RECORD COLLECTOR magazine you can expect a four page retrospective discussion of SIGN O' THE TIMES, written by Calum Waddell (one of the people who made the exclusive documentary on the Blu-ray set).

.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

.

BEWARE: the set is limited to 3000 copies and is apparently almost sold out!

It's always non estate releases that really are the most satisfying ... and yet the estate just provides cheap cardboard cd releases, all the releases from the estate have been so underwhelming aesthetically, everything from the booklet to the liner notes... With exception to the Originals Deluxe edition vinyl.

The Japanese version of Originals is very nice, booklet, lyrics, fold out package, extra version of Nothing Compare 2 U......good stuff.

.

It's not in the August 2019 issue (no. 495), so it'll be in the September 2019 issue -- which will likely be published in about a week or so, considering that the August issue went on sale from 18 July onwards.

Good effort, I suppose, but feels like a lot of fluff. Doc looks like it’s mostly talking heads with fans...and everyone here should know how tiresome that can be. One day, we’ll get a package that really means something.

Sweet jebus, why even bother commenting when you obviously know nothing? "Fans". How about you look up the names of the people that were interviewed. "Fans".

Two words: Dr. Funkenberry. I rest my case. Like I said, s good effort but this release is strictly for the gullible; the OP being a fine example.

..and since you asked, here are several other reasons to buy it:

- Ridiculously over-produced packagng. A distraction? Of course not.

- Susan Rogers. People will be treated to new info, of course, given that she's been speaking to anyone who'll listen for the past three years.

- Dr. Fink. Mr. Enthusaism.

- Lots of fan insight. The air of delusion hanging over these people would be distasteful if it wasn't so comical. Will they ever quit? Let's find out!

- Two Dutch sounding people who engineered the piece. I wondered what hapenned to them!

- Some guy who wrote 'The Dutch Experience'. You go girl.

- It comes out of Germany. That mecca of Princedom.

Why did I waste my time writing this?

Wrote the foreword for the booklet. Sure, pointless, but not what you make of it.

Yes I agree, the packaging has been not of the quality expected. I feel poor packaging means poor content!

The vinyl packaging has been great but I just don't like some of the ideas, for example, the Piano and Microphone deluxe.

The CD packaging has been shockingly bad. The EU version of Originals is terrible, but the USA version of Originals isn't great but it is much better than the EU version. The USA version has a nice hard spine which helps it keep it's shape.

The card version of Ultimate Rave is terrible but the Japanese jewel case version is very nice indeed!

The estate needs to be aware that the presentation of the product does effect people's perception of the quaity of the content.

Just saw this on a recent Facebook post of the people who made the documentary:

.

This hits shelves on 23rd Sept and includes our 102 minute long documentary PRINCE: THE PEACH AND BLACK TIMES plus an added, nearly three hours worth of fully edited interviews with the participants.

Just read it and it is pull-your-hair-out bad in places. At best it is superficial, and I don't think it offers much insight into the making of the movie, but parts of it are just downright wrong. There's a little sidebar about the cloud guitar that completely ignores that the guitar was based on the design of a bass.

Why do you even bother? You’re your own worst enemy.

Hey guys,

I am likely to be in either Frankfurt or Munich late September in transit, and have half a day there.

Do any of you know where in either or both cities I would be able to pick it up from?

Do you think I should try and order it in advance and have it on hold? If yes, how should I order-are there websites?

Try Saturn or Mediamarkt, both are electronics stores (like BestBuy) with plenty of locations in Germany. You can order to pick up too.

I meant overnight regarding 'in transit', as have to wait 12 hours for connecting flight.

One week to go!

However, Amazon Germany is telling me that I should expect delivery around 18/19 September. Bit of a bummer.

From what they're saying I understand that they didn't do a new HD scan, they worked with the existing one -- so the same one that was likely used for the Australian and the Japanese BDs, and for the HD broadcasts and streaming versions; most likely this was the same source as the one used for the acclaimed Canadian DVD which was IIRC the first truly great release of this movie. They did however "correct" bad spots etc., as well as some interlacing artifacts in the UGTL video. (Note that this company apparently has extensive experience in this area.)

.

The two multi-track audio mixes (for different technologies) were done by different teams, each with their own preferences, so you'll hear differences if you've got equipment that can play both versions. Note that both started form the stereo mix (at least that's what I understood) and used advanced technologies to isolate voices etc. for the multple channels and to achieve the 3D audio effects.)

.

The guy from Turbine also explains how they did actually do a second round of interviews after the official announcements because then some people who previously didn't want to be involved (or wanted too much money) came around.
