Make-Up!

THAT is my SONG, Baby!!! biggrin biggrin biggrin

When we get Editors curating albums, we may not get the suprising bitts Priapist Prince perpetually pushed into his albums—and the explicit political ANTIWAR* messages are totally absent from this “Origials”—but at least Editors threw in a curve ball to catch some of us off guard in collection that was remarkable only in its understatements.

*Make-Up's double entendre goes beyond the cosmetic and sounds like an explicit command to “make up”, which aside form ferocious love songs, is a subtle if backhand nudge (over a punk/funk groove) toward detente, peace, and making love not war.

It's not a double meaning. He was writing songs for a girl group. Your theory is also bad because if "make up" is a nudge for peace, he also says, "have another cigarette, I'm not ready yet", which would imply the narrator has no time to make peace themselves. So it becomes hypocritical and loses its audience.

It's a song about being easy, breezy, beautiful. That simple.

This experience will cover courtship, sex, commitment, fetishes, loneliness, vindication, love, and hate.

LOVE this song on THE ORIGINALS. It's so crystal clear too. Like it was recorded yesterday. Amazing that this tune was recorded in 1981!!!

Make Up was always my standout favorite from the Vanity 6 album

I love hearing Prince's voice on this one. If you watch and listen Prince and Susan Moonsie shared/copied movies and expressions from one another.

I always loved Susan's version too, but was surprised how well this song worked as a Prince vocal as well. The lyrics don't need very much tweaking at all to work as is, it would've been a great weird little b-side or deep cut on Controversy/1999. Reminds you how genderfuck Prince was back then.

Sorry, this is the one song on the Originials I don't like. I'm not into the music and the lyrics make me cringe.

Yeah, but it's just a fun corny song. It's no more or less corny than "If A Girl Answers, Don't Hang Up". I don't think it's quite meant to be a serious song.

I agree that it's the worst thing on Originals. Doesn't make me cringe but there's nothing in the track to excite me. Can't dance to it, can't sing to it, not a catchy melody, weird soundscape. I've never really been into or felt any need to listen to side projects, so I hadn't heard the original release but someobdy in this thread saying it was the stand out track on its original album makes me definitely not want to hear any more of that album.

Dude lol I said it is the stand out for me. Not saying it is the best song on the Vanity 6 album (Nasty Girl) (Drive Me Wild) (If A Girl Answers..) I always like the "quirkier" songs the most. I love weird soundscapes, cannot dance to a lot of Prince songs really

Ah yeah, I see what you mean about the difference between stand out and best. Normally when I hear people talk about a stand out track it's in terms of it being the best but your clarification makes sense.

I listened to Sheila's albums once or twice and The Time albums a couple of times. Whenever I listened to them I always wished it was Prince singing the songs, so don't really go back to them. Never listened to the lesser known ones though. What can I say, I like Prince singing to me smile

Always remember that on a lot of the songs Prince is sing background and playing instruments. And in some cases he is a talking character on a song ie the Wallk / If a Girl Answers

I love mixing them in with an era playlist, like putting together a soundtrack playlist.

Did he orchestrate or re-arrange the melody for the 1983 live performances in Bloomington, NY etc? Because that version is spectacular.
