Future Baby Mama Grammy

This song is one that grew on me after Prince's passing. Never liked the title. I still don't love the lyrics but i do like the instrumentation and melody of this song, so when my wife plays it we both end up singing along. When i listen 2 it though, about halfway in I always think the same thing: how in the hell did this song win a grammy?!? I never once heard it on the radio stations here in Chicago. Radio is not my gauge but usually grammy winners tend 2 be those songs that are massively marketed and circulated. Does anyone remember if this song got any airplay on your local stations? Did Prince really get behind this song commercially, or did he just have a friend in the Grammy org or something?? Any idea of how it was even considered 4 the award? Just curious.

I think it was more to do with the format (genre) of the song and Prince being nominated that year than it was about this particular song being outstanding or a hit.

"Future Baby Mama" went to #6 on Billboard's Adult R&B radio chart, but that's a pretty niche format (I don't think there's an adult R&B station in my city). It might have reached the right people, though. Or maybe they just wanted to give Prince an award that year.

Its ok. Its one of those "Old Man Prince tying to be clever and hip" (like "This could be us" which is a much better song).

Now other other "Future" song (Future Soul Song) is a criminally underated Prince classic and could be the last, best song he's done.

Always amazed at the differences of opinion out there. hhaah. This fella thinks Future Baby Mama (title is dumb but the lyrics are great) is far better than This Could B Us.... which is kinda just a throwaway song... maybe because of it's simplification. It doesn't go anywhere or do anything, essentially loops, but that's prob what U get when u base something off a MEME

I NEVER heard it on the radio... But that said.. I never listened to radio after about 2001, except maybe independent radio at that point

My favorite from 'Planet Earth' and my favorite of ALL Prince's (r.i.p.) Grammy wins. That got regular radio play here.

Mikado

The Grammies has a weird thing where they'll do "makeup awards" - i.e. reward an artist who, in their prime, the Grammies had neglected. A good example of this was Steely Dan getting Album of the Year for Two Against Nature in 2001 - a decent album, but certainly nothing when compared to the rest of their catalog. Supernatural by Santana is another good example of a record made years after an act's prime, but it swept the Grammies Thriller-style in 2000.

So that was pretty much the force behind Prince's Grammy nominations in the 2000s. The Recording Academy felt bad that they neglected Prince in his artistic (and commercial) prime - one of Lionel Richie's middling albums beat Purple Rain for fuck's sake - so they showered him in noms later on.

I imagine in 20 years you'll probably see Beyonce win Album of the Year for a demo collection as a way of apologizing for Lemonade and her S/T not winning. Such is the strange quirks of the Grammies.

A certain kind of mellow.

Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance

Prince(r.i.p.) was clearly the best in that category and it was a WELL DESERVED win.

"Future Baby Mama" - PRINCE(r.i.p.)

"Because of You"- Ne Yo

"B.U.D.D.Y."- Musiq Soulchild

"Please Don't Go"- Tank

"Woman" - Raheem DeVAaughn
