Another revelation from that interview:

My biggest fear at the beginning was that I would touch something that would pulverize. The cassettes from the period before his first record contract, until around 1985, were in poor condition.

While the Dutch text says "cassettes", I suppose Howe himself actually said "tapes" and thus might refer to the original recordings...
