Prince's Album Titles As Nightclubs! Surprised this hasn't come up more here actually. Prince spent a whole lot of time hanging out in nightclubs all over the world - arguably when he should have found better things to do, especially as he got older.
Anyway, most of his album titles have more than one meaning, but it's interesting that almost all of them could refer to nightclubs/ live music joints ...
Witness - Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain, Parade, Sign o' the Times, Lovesexy, Graffiiti Bridge, D & P, Come, Gold Experience, Emancipation, Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth, Lotus Flower, Minneapolis Sound, Art Official Age.
I can imagine all of these as clubs of various sorts, each with a different style/ aesthetic. It's like Prince is selling the experience of each album as a visit to an imaginary club. Some are more 'uptown' and 'exclusive' (The Gold Experience, Art Official Age), others a bit sleazier ('downtown' - Dirty Mind, Come), some sound like 80s nightclubs in London (take your pick!!).
Interesting to think about!!
