Purple Underground Vol. 8

NO SOLICITING FOR BOOTLEGS! Discussion is fine, so long as the bootleg is not being promoted e.g. pre-release; requests/offers to share or copy, and links to download or bootleg sites are not.Posting Prince and associated artist videos from sites such as YouTube is also not allowed. Posts of this nature will be deleted and repeat offenders will be first warned, and then banned. Troll threads, fake tracklists, and attention seeking rumor threads will be also be swiftly dealt with. These rules are strictly enforced!

***************

The new volume of "Purple Underground" has appeared. The only new stuff is the Madhouse show (the first one in circulation actually) and the rehearsal for the New Year's Eve concert. There's also the "Hot Thing" rehearsal (only '"Shockadelica" and parts of "Superfunkycalifragisexy" were previously leaked last year in better quality).

Because they are outside of US & with international rules ...it will be for this case difficult to sue them directly !

omg, this is gorgeous! Don't get me wrong, I quite enjoy The Originals - but the Hot Thing Rehearsal blows everything on the new official release away. There's nothing as funky on there as the first minute of Hot Thing. Or the second minute. Or the third.

This is exactly the stuff that shows the mastery of Prince. Just him & the band jamming for half an hour on a groove that's funky like hell. I could listen to this till the end of time...

Estate, please give me a subscription service just for the part of vault containing all these unbelievable rehearsals that surfaced during the last 2 or 3 years! Whatever you ask - I'll gladly pay the fee!

Has anyone listened to disc 3 yet ?

The info files says it is a rehearsal from December 87 - a rehearsal for the New Years Eve show.

Has this been confirmed as I am not so sure.

The set list is identical to the February 87 rehearsal, apart from IGBABN #1

But this song is cut into the set very abruptly. If it it removed, then listening to the rehearsal the sound flows more.

IGBABN #2 also sounds more like it did at the beggining of the tour. Fairly short - and by the time you get to November and especially the New Years Eve Version it has evolved into a long jam with lots of different elements.

The set has Starfish & Coffee in it too, which was there at the beginning but dropped for the tour.

Plus, the only oldie played is Kiss.

My hunch is that this is actually from February or March 87.

I am no expert, just a hunch.

Loving disc 2 with the Hot Thing rehearsal and Shockadelica.

Not listened to disc 1 yet - how does it compare to the 4DF release ??

Overall loving this release (and also loving Originals).

Glad Eye is still around as the drip feeding from the estate is way too slow.

Quite special that U Got The Look is played in this rehearsal. The song usually wasn't on the playlist during the SOTT-Tour, but it was played during the New Year's Eve Show, which could give us a hit.

But as far as I know it was also rehearsed several times before the start of the SOTT-Tour, so that doesn't say too much....

How much of an upgrade does the Paris gig represent to the previous version? I see it's still lacking It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night, I'm guessing it's just a fan "remaster" in that case?

I have compared this new Eye rehearsal with the existing rehearsal from 21-02-87 and i think they are definitely different rehearsals, but they are almost certaintly from the same time.

I really do not think the new Eye release is a December 87 rehearsal.

Comparing the two:

SoTT: The '17 year old boys' line - a much different inflection on the vocals.

Play In The Sunshine: Eye has more band instruments tapping during the into. The chord changes are noticably different and there are more cymbals. The Eye version is more guitar heavy, and there is band chatter before the 1st verse.

Housequake: Different 'shut up already' line

Slow love: The lyrics are reversed in the 21-02-87 rehearsal, but in the correct order on the new Eye rehearsal. 21-02-87 starts 2, 3, huh and the Eye rehearsal is 2, 3 and straight into the song.

Starfish: False start on the February rehearsal

Hot Thing: There is an extra beat then a pause at the start of the 21-02-87 rehearsal. Not on the Eye rehearsal

If I Was Your GF: chat at the beginning of Eye rehearsal, plus discussion of an off note at the end of the song. Not on existing rehearsal.

U Got The Look: New Eye rehearsal is more guitar heavy and starts X, Y, Z and in. The existing Feb rehearsal starts W, X, Y, Z and in

Strange Relationship: Different Keyboard scatting at start. Band chat at beginning of new rehearsal.

ICNTTPOYM: Eye rehearsal has a drum beat intro, old rehearsal is straight in

Forever In My Life: Eye rehearsal has more band chat at the start. The old rehearsal has more prominent lyrics at the start.

The Cross: Different starts to each rehearsal

IGBABN: The older version is longer, but if from the Eye rehearsal you take #1 and add it to after #2 it sounds like a continuation. Not sure why Eye split it up and inserted it into the middle.

Anyway - definitely different, and definitely not December (in my not expert opinion smile )
