I never witness or saw Prince play guitar for When Doves Cry. I would have loved to have seen it though! Hopefully, there is video footage of him performing it in the vault! I have to agree that Wendy's guitar performance of that song is an abomination! The best performance - guitar wise- that I ever witness of When Doves Cry was performed by Mint Condition at the Prince Tribute concert in October 2016 at the Xcel Center! He (Homer O'Dell) played the opening riff note for note, which was the first time I ever saw someone do that- totally amazed me!
I could have sworn I did at the jam of the year tour in 97? He shredded out the opening for WDC I busted out crying it was so badass. I actually cried thru the whole thing

Please they killed that song on the Parade tour. The best rendition of it ever.

on Parade tour they ommited the intro and Wendy still sucked at playing guitar solo on that.

im sorry but it is true.
best version is from the Nude tour
Probably did but Wendy was a lot better than some of the scribes said. Prince never played lets go crazy or purple rain like he did on record so far as I know. I saw a guy on YouTube playing the wc opening perfectly but a lot of musicians only play and not write or sing or dance.

I think you misunderstood. rnb said "Hopefully, there is video footage..." And I hope so, too! I'd love to see it.

I remember learning (or trying, LOL) that opening riff and I, too, watched vids on YouTube. There was one guy who could play it perfectly and he said it was such a badass riff that he wouldn't be surprised if the only time Prince ever played it like that was when he recorded it.
I thought, No way!" but this thread has reminded me that my only memories of the opening riff being performed on tour were on the "Purple Rain" tour and if I recall, that part was actually a recording, played before the band struck it up live.
So maybe that dude was right! It's a heck of a riff; you don't hear many play it outside of their bedroom or whatever. And rnb is right - Homer O'Dell DID play that thing note-for-note. I saw him do it in 2017, playing with the NPG at a show in Minneapolis.
I would have loved to hear Prince play guitar on that song live. But, I've never heard of a recording to exist of him doing it.
Wendy, in my opinion, never played his lead guitar stuff that well. She was awesome with the funky/rhythm riffs, though. Miko was my favorite with playing Prince's lead/solo stuff.

Not being a guitarist, i don't know how hard or easy it is, the guy on youtube made it look easy but skill does that. After Prince died, one of the zz top bros, (sorry, don't know the names) said that he once asked prince about that opening riff and prince said something like "don't worry about it, it gets me too".

LOL, you're right - I remember that quote! That was from Billy Gibbons, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist himself.
i play piano and it constantly drives me nuts how I can't play perfectly, i feel bad and beat myself up but many great musicians feel that way. Artie shaw said that he had to quit or his perfectionism would kill him. Playing live is a whole nother matter, you add in all the distractions and things you have no control over as well as the fact that you can't stop and try to get some screwups right, it's a whole different thing. Doesn't seem to take away from how a live audience likes my performances though.

Man, hearing Wendy struggle through Alexa De Paris on those early Parade shows is real torture. As solid as we was as a rhythm player, she just simply didn't cut it with the leads. Listen to her butcher the Little Red Corvette solo on PR tour night after night...

OMG, you'd have to try and butcher that one, such a simple thing to play, but He often chose players based on their image more than their abilities. And I've never seen him play the intro, probably a lucky one off, cos if you're good you can replicate your good moments, he never played his so called famous solos the same live either, lots of punch ins on the records, Susan Rogers mentioned them on Let's Go Crazy, had to punch in on his solos, couldn't play it the same live, just sayin'...

Kinda crazy, I just re-listened to the Stockholm Parade show and she absolutely BUTCHERS the When Doves Cry solo that at that point she had been playing night after night for two years.

What an ignorant statement.
He chose musicians and collaborators he got affinities, good feelings with. And where does the vast majority of his musicians originate from?
He needed emotional security, it has been stated over and over. Just because Vanity was hot doesn't mean Brenda is (sorry Brenda). Abilities came second ("anybody can sing"), spirit, drive came first. He made bands out of his friends, not because of their looks. The rest is simply make-up and hairdo.
Oh, pardon me, you were implying Carmen Electra is a musician?
Does 3rdEyeGirl look like models to you? Tommy Barbarella may have been fine-looking, but he sure is a heck of a keyboard player.
As for stating that Prince HAD TO do punch-ins, you've clearly never made a studio recording. Go back to Cubase or something. A home studio ain't a studio.
And what a big joke you are with your "couldn't play it the same live". There's a "Purple Rain" in Milan where he plays the record solo note for note, and it's one of many examples (a late reprise of "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" does the same). He simply could have if he wanted to.
You're the classic wannabe musician who feels qualified to make statement about Prince musicanship. Your kind is all over the org. Just sayin'.

Leave it to the orgers to slash poor, stadium unexperienced, twenty-two year old Wendy standing next to the best pop performer in the world and having to live up to one of the greatest solo guitarists ever (while he's on stage as you try to replicate what can't be).
But you all wouldn't have shit your pants now, would U.

all over the world really, not to be mean to the guy but those types are a dime a dozen really. I'm not guitarist, and he might be half right, I wouldn't know but the little red corvette solo is not easy to play for me as a pianist, I'm a hardworking guy but I'd never call myself a virtuoso or even gifted musician but it's just not an easy solo to emulate, largely because it's spliced together so it doesn't fit perfectly, even on the original recording, (who cares, it's my favorite guitar solo of all time) so when I play it, i have to either stretch out the solo to fit the bass or cut out a couple beats in the left hand, I've only played it right, maybe a few times if that, but people like it. Also, I never heard one guitarist play the solo from LRC as it was on the record, his guitarist on the lovesexy tour (miko) got close but it wasn't note for note, in fact, the closest i heard was whoever he had in the third eye girl, which said to me the teg critics didn't really know what they were talking about. Wendy did fine in the syracuse performance of it, not perfect but not bad either, especially considering she was filling dez' shoes, who i might add played it even worse on some of the live performances I've seen from that era. I think he does it better in the post '16 performance though. either way, doesn't matter that much, live performance isn't about perfection. also, if you know where i can find the milan performance let me know.

and for what it's worth, i have to agree with the guy on the purple rain performance, i've never heard him sing or play like that live. I adapted the solo to piano, hell, it's a bitch of a solo, at least for me, maybe the toughest one i've ever taken on.
I think what he means is if you think that's the hardest thing you've ever had to play you might want to consider taking lessons or a break, not being mean, but shite, nothing complicated here, brah, you speak of it as it if it's fekin mozart or bach, it's as basic as it gets, and yes, the solo is spilced together, you can hear it at the mid-mark, no big deal there, it's still simple as hell on guitar. can't imagine it being any harder on keys either, maybe I'll give it a whirl...

ah, Boney, the non-musician, true, Tomy Barbarella is a good keyboard player, no Carmen Electra is not a musician, just like you, and yes he does do punch-ins, everyone does, you're just a fan, boyo, this topic is for players, not dreamers, move along to threads involving wardrobe or what if? scenarios...
