New Power Generation shouldve been the first pic.

I strongly disagree. To me, "New Power Generation" is a weak song that shouldn't have been a single at all. The music is all right, but something about those chanty, self-referential lyrics really bugs me. ("My Name Is Prince" has a similar effect.)

"Thieves in the Temple," on the other hand, has some artful mystique, and the extended version is glorious. Of the album's highlights (which also include "The Question of U" and "Joy in Repetition"), I think it has the most commercial appeal--so I think it was the right choice for lead single.

[Edited 6/6/19 6:29am]

it's a pretty weak song. Thieves, i thought was too, at the time but i love the demo as i mentioned. Prince tooted his own horn in the RS interview about thieves in the temple, explaining how he was still improving and growing by saying he'd never used chords like the opening ones, most people don't care what chords he uses, they just want to enjoy the music.

I agree Pete - the acoustic demo of Thieves is SO much better than the released version. You can hear the raw emotion in the demo version and it sounds so good with just the guitar. I love Question of U too, but it’s so much better when he played it live. Then in ‘92 when he mixed Thieves and It together live it was so good.

This has always been one of my favorite songs by Prince. The lyrics for me, the mental anguish that he sings about in the song, I've always been able to relate to, and I think everyone can. I think it's that whole, we are our own worst critics and sometimes when we let our thoughts get the better of us, take away our peace of mind, we can despair of ever finding that peace again, especially when it comes to the mental anguish we go through over a relationship ending.

I recal when it came out that he made some statment that he wrote it when he was mad or something and that he did not like to write from that place... but it is a great song.

I think Kim B was one of the “thieves in the (his) temple, because in the extended version of the video he lists “Love - A Thief’s Definition”. I think when he sings “love come quick, love come in a hurry, there are thieves in the temple tonight” and “voices from the sky say rely on your best friend to pull you through, but I couldn’t really cuz my only friend is you..” he’s singing to someone else - wanting someone else there to comfort him and love him. I could be wrong though.
*
It makes me think of the song Wally and him singing “what am I gonna do, she was the only one in the whole world I could talk to..”. Now we know, based on her recent interviews, that Susannah Melvoin was still privately seeing Prince at least up through 1988 or possibly longer. I think she started dating Seal sometime in ‘89.
*
But no doubt he was pissed and hurt that Kim B abruptly left MN, and she is most likely the “thief in the temple”.

I always thought this song was about those in the inner circle and how the bootlegs were getting out to the masses? That Prince really couldn't trust anyone around him at the time?

It’s possible, but it always struck me as a message about a lover doing him wrong and possibly also to another lover (love come quick, love come in a hurry, there are thieves in the temple tonight..) to comfort him. Also, on the extended video when he displays the “Love, A Thief’s Definition” list, one of the points is “making love like an animal swearing up and down that your lover is the best, all the while looking for your next conquest”. I think that list was definitely meant for Kim B, because she walked out on the GB film (can’t really blame her for that) and also abruptly ended the relationship - reportedly because she either found him with Robin Power or found out about his “sexcapades” during that time.
*
Ya gotta love Prince though - the women usually left him for justifiable reasons yet he’s always the victim in his songs biggrin

Pete, Wendy stated (during hr interview with Questlove) that the band would play a continuous life loop for 4-5 hours straight just so he could practice certain dance moves. It’s how he perfected the whole James B routine for the PR tour. Hours and hours of practice - that’s how he got better smile

Great time to be alive.
I was in MPLS for a week break and then saw him in concert in Buenos Aires for my first time. cool

It obviously worked as the first single, it ended up being ANOTHER top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hit for Prince(r.i.p.)....

As for the whole Kim B. thing (I'm assuming the B is for Basinger), I distinctly remember reading that her family had to 'rescue' her from Paisley Park due to the fact that they couldn't get a hold of her for some time and they thought she was being held prisoner there. Can I back this up with facts in black and white? No, it's been so long ago and I don't even remember where or what celebrity magazine I had read it, but I do remember reading it. Anyone else remember this particular incident?

Yes, that's what I heard also.

Actress Kim Basinger fell in love with the late Prince, just before she met her future ex-husband Alec Baldwin. According to Page Six, Basinger gave up Hollywood and moved to Minneapolis to be with Prince. The at the time, in-love actress made a never-released album with Prince, Hollywood Affair, including the single Color of Sex, on which she raps "I'll be your slave" and "I like the way you make me feel".

Basinger's family were so unhappy about the two being together that they arrived unannounced at Prince's house, where they knew he wasn't there, and flew Basinger away.

Basinger was so in love with the fuchsia-loving funkster in 1989 — a year before meeting her future hubby Alec Baldwin — that she gave up Hollywood and moved to Prince’s hometown of Minneapolis to be with him.

Her family, believing that Prince had her under some spell, was concerned enough for her that they arrived unannounced at Prince’s house when they knew he wasn’t there and whisked her away.

Yes, this is the common story. Prince did NOT dump her though. I think he fell hard for her too. Of course, as with all of his relationships, it seems he was still with other women on the side - if you believe Robin Powers’s accounts. She was on this site several years back “spilling the tea”, as they say.
*
If you've heard Prince’s unreleased song I Wonder, which was recorded around the time that she left, it explains what happened - “A Southern gust of wind came and took my girl away from me (Kim’s from GA), now my tears could fill an ocean, my tears could fill a sea...” “I wonder if she knows how much I love her, I wonder if she knows how much I need her face around...”
*
Yep, Prince was smitten with Kim B, the sex kitten for sure.

Kim wouldn't leave the twin cities after Prince(r.i.p.) ended the relationship. She flipped completely out. So Prince(r.i.p.) called her brother who came to get her, and after they left Kim's car was still left at Paisley Park. So Prince(r.i.p.) had it towed away back to her.

Ridiculous rumors about Prince having a "hold" on Kim sexually and/or psychologically are sensationalistic, bloated gossip. Kim had lifelong mental issues.

prince had quirky taste in women, i never got the kim basinger relationship and thought it might have been like the appolonia "relationship" at the time, you know, just for show. I never got the sussanah relationship either as I thought she was ugly. overall, there weren't a lot of women who had anything intellectually to contribute. Also, i think his or any man's need to play the ladies man is a flaw, a common one but a flaw.

What’s not to get about the Kim B relationship?? She’s a gorgeous woman with an incredible body, and I don’t think she’s not bright either - just extremely shy in public. I don’t think she’s a Rhode’s scholar, but she’s not dumb.

I like that he fell in love with a girl who was not just another Playboy model type. It showed that he wanted to go deeper than the epidermal layer, and he needed someone with more substance.

This song still sounds like *nothing* else on the radio, similar to "When Doves Cry" or "7" in that regard.
