Compilation of live recordings

I wish they would release a compilation of Prince's live recordings. It'd be nice to have them in one place rather than having to search Youtube. I'm more interested in that than unfinished songs he decided not to release or versions of songs that he didn't choose or whatever. Give us the live music!

What do you think?

A subscription site would be ideal for soundboard concert recordings.

While I’d love that, studio work in the vault is what I’m most interested in.

It’s a no brainer. Prince’s live shows were lengendary and should be released both in audio and video compilations

A subscription would work.

I'm interested in the studio work in the vault. Just want the live stuff first (and it seems it would be quicker to get them produced, but I could be wrong about that, I guess).

I know I'm in the minority but I'm more interested in unheard studio outtakes. I don't really care for live recordings unless I'm actually at the show. That being said, I'd still buy it if that is what was released.

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

I would love to see The Estate release all of Prince's official concerts and after-shows online, direct from the soundboard, in both a digital format and CD copy, for $10 a pop. I would easily spend hundreds of dollars on various shows - just myself.

this. I also don't really care about live releases unless it's a live video and not just audio.

Oohh, I'd love a recording of some aftershows. And, yes, to digital format.

I'd take videos. I do have some favorite live recordings that I'd like to put on my playlist when I'm not able to watch. biggrin

This.

For some reason, that was the Holy Grail that Prince stubbornly sat on throughout his career. Guess he figured it would create more excitement for his actual shows - and maybe he was right - but a lot of bands cultivated a HUGE fan base and dedicated consumers by virtue of making their shows available to buy, download and share and I always felt Prince missed the boat on this opportunity.

Especially with the aftershows which were unpredictable and different every single night.

Aside from the jewels that are undoubtedly in the vault, video and audio of the aftershows is #1 on my posthumous wish list.

Even if it's a no-brainer, most of those involved have no brains. Does that make it more difficult? Add one part Londell McMuffin, one part Estate, one part Jay Z, one part Troy Butter or whoever he is, and you got crap releases. And no matter how nice the quality is, Blu Ray will never happen. If we are lucky, we get Lovesexy Live, First Avenue 8-3-83. We also may get the Earth tour from London, but those were not very good shows. I'd rather just get Montreux for a later day show

How much work would one need to put into a Prince concert to give it a broad release?

I mean, on the face of it maybe you could just rip the audio/video form whatever source Prince had (soundboard, for sure) and let it out there flaws and all. I'd be really cool with that.

But on the other hand, lots of artists don't want anything released that isn't perfect which, in the case of live recordings, means overdubs. Since I doubt anyone would get excited by a Prince concert released with, say, RodeoSchro's guitar overdubs then isn't this point moot?

And if it's moot, meaning that the only way to release live stuff is just transfer it from the source and kaboom! then the estate should kaboom! it.

I know Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen have both had tours where you could buy/download every single show on that tour. If they could do it, the Prince estate could too.

Honestly, for most of them, I'd just want the raw recordings. I'd even buy the Lovesexy Aftershow on an official release even with some of the sound issues...

Now for the best of the best, I would want them mastered professionally, like First Avenue 83, imgaine that in better quality, as a Blu Ray/CD combo with the rehearsal. But for the run of the mill show, just a raw recording. And make it affordable. $6 for each 80 min of MP3 or FLAC, $10 per cd, with possible volume discounts, but we all know, it won't happen. I have no faith in those that the vault is in the hands of.

From what I've heard, Prince recorded and/or filmed every show he ever did so I doubt it'd be tough to do something, especially from just an audio standpoint. The Alladin DVD has abysmal production values so cobbling a live show together that at least reaches that bar should be easy.

I think even if some of it is raw, lacks a certain polish and has some fuckups that in some ways it would make it better. I like watching great artists screw up and then re-find it. The Stones always sound like they're just about to lose their way and it adds to the edge of the thing for me.

Again, we don't have a will with specific instructions. We just have a bunch of money hungry poeple who don't care about the shows or releases. We're lucky we are getting the Originals cd. The simple fact that someone with limited intelligence like Londell McMuffin was even involved for ten seconds proves we are doomed.

Putting that aside, if we can move to fantasy land....I'd love tons of video content. Even the awful looking 1985 Atlanta show that can't possibly be fixed, unless there is another source, I would take in the crap quality, it makes the Alladin show look perfect. And he did not film every single show. He did film a tremendous amount of shows starting around 1992 or so, so raw releases would be possible, but even in a fantasy world, cd releases much more likely than video. Can you imagine the nightmare of getting clearance for shows when Prince went crazy for remakes. They may as well buy all the publishing and performance rights of Play That Funky Music. He played that song at at least 20 of the 50 shows I went to, and to think he played that song live more than Computer Blue and Anna Stesia combined. Sad.

Pearl Jam being one of the best examples of releasing their live concerts as "Official Bootlegs".

Hundreds of concerts, officially released! They're not pristine soundboards like we're used to for Prince, but they are still well done.

Prince just did not understand what Pearl Jam was doing. Just like he felt Witness 4 The Prosecution should remain unreleased, and Jughead should have

Frustrating part now is watching all the live video boots that are out and spoting the film crew filming the whole show from all angles...no wonder he ran out of space in the vault.
