Walk In Sand ~ Prince(20Ten) This thread is not an album review. Just a song 'review'
After a long journey, the final mile 'Cause nothing's better than to walk in sand Another sun is rising Memories come and then they go Nothing's better than to walk in sand Walk in sand We have danced with royalty If there... If there was only one thing Nothing's better than to walk in sand Nothing's better than to walk in sand Nothing's better than to walk in sand
Walk In Sand is the seventh track from Prince's 35th album 20TEN. Soon after its release, the Portuguese beer company Super Bock streamed a video of the song to promote their product in conjunction with Prince's appearance at the Palco Super Bock music festival. The video was removed, however, following a copyright claim by NPG Records, and it appears it was not sanctioned, so the video is not listed below or in the music videos section. A tape photographed in Prince's vault at Paisley Park Studios lists it as 1 August 2009 alluding the exact date for the recording at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Unlike the rest of the album, the song features live drums, played by Prince himself, rather than programmed drums. -PrinceVault

Next to Sticky Like Glue, easily my favorite on 20Ten
It's one of those songs that feels like foundational Prince

I like it a lot. One of my favorite songs on that album. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

"Walk in Sand" is a great song! "Future Soul Song" is one of my favorites from the "20Ten" album.

Always pegged it as one of the weakest slow-jams of his career.

One of the best songs on 20Ten Welcome 2 The Dawn

It grows on you, just like the rest of the album does. The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams

It's often referred to as like something from a tampon advert. I think it's OK, something he could do in his sleep. . I do like the album though. Especially the sequence of Sticky Like Glue - Act Of God - Lavaux. I love the rhythm guitar on Beginning Endlessly and Sticky Like Glue. . Be nice if the Deluxe gets a release one day to get the extended Lavaux

After a certain point there was not going to be 'ground breaking' music.
Like most artists, if you give me the essence of 'Prince -purple music' I'm into it. I can listen to this one followed by How Come U Don't Call Me...
I love his falsetto on this one, he sounds like 1979 Prince, I didn't hear any of the 1990 battleworn Prince

eh sometimes u have to just appreciate talking about a song without dragging 'estate' complaints into it. We could do a thread talking about every song and needlessly bring up 'the estate'

Love this song. Even if Prince's drumming does speed up as the song progresses PIPS! Eurgh...

20Ten is a special album to me because it is as easy to enjoy as ice cream. Most of the songs on it are relatively simple by his standards and are so accessible, including Walk in the Sand.

Exactly how I feel about this song. It has a certain lightness, romantic vibe, and positivity to it. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Really? That would be Extraordinary, Satisfied or On the Couch for me. I like Walk in Sand a lot, it has all the ingredients of late 70s Prince and really nice lyrics. What do you dislike about it? " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Love this song, just wish he didn't make it segue direct into Sea Of Everything.

We need to put together a list of songs post 1989 that give that quintessensial For You/Prince - ballad/folk-purple music vibe. Tangerine is another, that I immediately get that from.
Walk In Sand gives me that late 70s early 80s 'quiet' that a lot of music had.

Walk In Sand gives me that late 70s early 80s 'quiet' that a lot of music had. Closest I can think of, off the top of my head.. . Sweet Baby She Loves Me 4 Me Soul Sanctuary Circle Of Amour One Of Your Tears Reflection Don't Talk 2 Strangers . Some moreso than others

Bonatoc-- thanks for the heads-up about the video. I'd never seen it. Pretty cool.

It's just very vanilla. Compare it to Damn U, Dark, Goodbye, Friend Lover Sister Mother/Wife or even Future Soul Song from the same album, and it just doesn't hold a candle. The chorus is inane, unimaginative and repetitive. I'm not the kind of fan who rags on his later work often - I appreciate music from all eras of his career - but I distinctly remember hearing Walk In Sand for the first time and being shocked that he let something so mediocre get an album release. Thanks for replying. I love those songs you mentioned above, too, and I agree that maybe their lyrics are a tad better than Walk in Sand´s lyrics. Then again, Walk in Sand is still better than Extraordinary, Satisfied and On the Couch. I just love the idea of walking in sand at a beach with a girlfriend. Brings back good memories. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

The song has a dual tone to it. The opening few lines set the tone of 'the end'
After a long journey, the final mile
It's a bright happy song, but also a song about death. Going into the dawn. It could also be about instability of life or reuniting with past friends
Vanilla is good. We don't always needs leather whips chains and toys lol

Ugh. Guess I'm in the minority. One of my least favorite Prince songs ever.

[Edited 6/1/19 19:52pm] Great points. We take for granted Prince’s wealth of gifts, coupled with his amazing work ethic and the fact that Art/Creativity is not factory work.

Album gets a BIT of a bad rap but not by much. I put the songs in order of how much I liked them when I downloaded them and usually checked out around #5. For the record: Sricky Like Glue
