or was his style just an evolution.

on Dirty Mind tour he didnt wear pants

,he started doing it on Controversy tour,on 1999 his look

was more toned down compared to earlier tours.

Was that part opf the strategy so he can get crossover

success or no?

i know lot of people had problem with his leg warmer

trench coat image ,one of the reasones he had debacle as a Rolling Stones opener.

also songs like Head were rarely performed on 1999 tour.

He did... in his later years to become a living legend. The Prince of Musicology, R&R Hall of Fame and Superbowl had to be more accessible than the "weird" Prince of before.

Ad for PR, IDK, I don't think so, the neo romantic look was just the thing at the time, the post-punk look of Dirty Mind was just already out of date. And Head may not have been performed but, Darling Nikki? And Head was performed again in 86 and 88.

I don't know... he was pretty "out there" for Purple Rain...singng about masturbating with magazines, and such.. Plus, he wore ass-less pants in 1991 for Diamonds & Pearls, one of his biggest commercial albums... He didn't really "tone down" anything...

I'm sure you know but just in case: he did not. They tried it and the fabric was falling in a gross way, so he had another layer of flesh-colored fabric added to fill the holes.

So we, in fact, haven't seen P's ass

he did, but whether it was calculated or not, the crazy shit he did before made it possible for him to do what he did later. He had pretty much cemented his image as an outsider before 1999/purple rain and people were fascinated enough, but not won over, by the time of 1999 and purple rain, people started seeing that he was the main man in the business. He still showed enough ass and wrote insane lyrics but I don't think he ever went back to anything as sick as sister or blatantly sexually ambiguous as the stuff on dirty mind. so, ya, he lessened the shock but still would occasionally get right back into it. the debacle of releasing If i was your girlfriend, (a choice susan rogers takes the blame for) to win back his black audience is a perfect example of a song that would cause the kind of audience reaction the dirty mind era had. He was basically a superstar cult artist by the time of sott though.

I am not sure that Prince had to tone down what he was doing. But then again. Prince was different from other artists.

singing about incest would have never been acceptable, i think he regretted it later, i'd be interested in when was the last time he performed it. Of course rock bands, the white guys had been singing about taboo subjects forever but black acts usually didn't do any of that wierd shit. either way, i don't think he could have gone superstar with more songs like that, as it was, they lambasted him for darling nikki, which was the start of the whole pmteachers or whatever the fuck it was sticker that they put on records. problem is, a subject like incest wouldn't just turn the morality crusaders against him, a fan like me doesn't want to think about shit like that, it's nasty.

i dont think he regret it.Sister was part of the concep.

Dirty Mind was a conceptual album about sexual perversities

Let's just say it- "He didn't care what anyone else thought." He was going to do what he wanted to do, in the time and place he wanted and how he wanted. And because of his talent, very few people told him no. (Not always a great thing, look at his failed relationships and his spiral into doing prescription drugs.)

Part of what we saw as he got older was just that, a musician yes, but everyone has different likes and tastes as you go through this life. After many experiences, you want something else. If not, you would get bored to death. In youth, you think too much about sex, in middle life you measure your successes, and towards the end, you think about what your legacy will be.

Just the natural progression, that's all.
