I feel The Revolution did shine on the screen and in his earlier videos. They helped craft his image as a vast array of race & personalities and was innovative. But they didn't challenge Prince(r.i.p.) musically. They just duplicated what he wanted live.
Btw: I did enjoy them live the few times I seen them since Prince(r.i.p.) transitioned. But I can tell the difference without his guidance in directions only he can take them.
"That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when was doing the Purple Rain tour had a lot of people who knew 'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."

Sure, we all can, they're not a full time band, they're a backup band, they spend half their frickin' show talking about how they're nothing without him. As for challenging prince musically, i wouldn't be so arrogant as to assume I'd know what did or didn't challenge him. I enjoy fairly all his bands for different reasons, and as a fan of pop music i like a good strong image - not something I'd accuse some of Prince's (RIP 1958-2016 forever in my life, the beautiful one, the horny toad) latter bands of having. I still love me some NPG tho. [Edited 6/7/19 14:56pm]
