For what it’s worth, I always loved the lyric, ‘act your age, not your shoe size’

Clearly her journalism training lacked in symbolism and allegory. Prince said it himself: he was a poet. She's missing something really special.
And the MUSIC continues...forever...

Journalism is the world's most overrated degree. Most j-school grads can't write for shit.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Hey, I resemble that remark!! dunce But there's a grain of truth to it depending on subject. I'm a techie, I write tech. Could give a fuck about other subjects and sometimes it shows.

Nothing against journalists, but Nicole needs to stick to medical writing. Agree with the OP all day long. That has got to be the dumbest thing ever written about Prince. She probably put 10 whole minutes of effort into it when she got that assignment.

I will concede that Prince had written some horrible lyrics. When you write hundreds of songs, there are bound to be some stinkers. (There are a number of older threads that point these out, so no need to rehashed them.) Nevertheless, this article is absurd.

.

Her premise is that she is going to cite lyrics that don't make sense. OK. But then one of her examples is: "Act your age, not your shoe size." I understand (and agree) that is a lame insult, but it makes sense. There's nothing confusing about it, so it doesn't satisfy her premise.

.

She also cites the chorus of Starfish and Coffee. Those lyrics are incredibly fun and absolute genuis. I don't see how anyone can be critical of them.

Hey, at least she was somewhat familiar with his catalogue.

My brother tops them all, although his was mis-heard, not written.

When I became a giant Prince fan he said, "You don't do drugs. Why do you like Prince? He's a cokehead!"

When I asked my brother why he thought that, he said, "He admits it in '1999' when he says he has a line in his pocket".

falloff

It was obvious she thought she was being quite humorous when she wrote this crap. Like many other great works of literature or songs, when you don't know the context of when or how it was being written; you just don't get it.

Since she is just dewy fresh out of school and a greenhorn, I will excuse most of it, but YOU really need to have a great understanding of your subject before you write about it. (in this case, too young ssssssssssoooooooooooo should have done more research!

We could tell her how "Starfish and Coffee" was probably written about a child with either developmental problems or autism, and promotes loving everyone around you, even if they are different, but she doesn't care, or she would have found that out!!!

dunce

Good morning children...take a look out your window, the world is falling...

I'm not opposed to someone making jokes about Prince lyrics. I just think her particular jokes are dumb.
