What piano on Piano & Mic 1983: Yamaha CP70? I finally got around to listening to P&M1983 (not sure why I can't find a thread on it here??) and somewhere I read that Don Batts the engineer said its just Prince on a Yamaha CP70 in his basement. .
1. Do we know if that's true?. . It sounds more like a true acoustic to me then the Elecdtric Grand Piano CP70. Pus I remember a lot of stuff saying his house had an acoustic piano mic'd up in it. . . 2. Also I thought Prince used the CP80 at least in Purple Rain and the tour, but I guess he coud've had teh CP70 in his house.

. Definitely not a CP70/80. It's an acoustic piano. Friends don't let friends clap on 1 and 3.

That's what I thought but in the Rolling Stone article Don Batts says: . “I don’t think people realize that this was recorded in a basement, basically; in a family room,” Batts adds. “I got the funds later to create a nicer room that we did ‘Little Red Corvette’ and some other stuff like that in, and a lot of the gear ended up out at Paisley [Park]. But this is an old, Yamaha piano – an old CP-70 – in the corner and an [AKG] 414 mic.” .

Yeah I get that.... but he might be misremembering or mis-naming the model of piano. . . SHeila has been saying some stuff in interviews lately that isn't 100% accurate and she admits she doesn't remember all the details from 30 years ago. . . My point was to those with more knowledge of the Yamaha Electric Grands and who have listened to the album, do you think it really is a Cp70? . . Cuz I have only hears simulations of the CP70 and on other records and it has a characteristic sound, but the 1983 Piano and A Mic album to my ears soudns like a regular acoustic piano. but i only listened a couple times so far.
. . Just curious as to others' thoughts.

The CP70 is only electronic in terms of how it trasfers the sounds to the recording equipment. It has real wooden keys, hammers and strings. So yes it does sound a lot like an acoustic piano. Prince used this a lot for both recordings and live shows back then. Google is you friend.

I'm well aware. . . Put the CP70 has a very unique and signaure sound. E.g. Jimmy Jam played "Tender Love" on a CP70 or CP 80 and it has that sound. . . . . I don't think the 1983 Piano & Mic sounds like that. . .

And how about the "beat" soudns? it sounds lik ehe's just stomping on the sustain pedal and letting it up to keep time.
