From 'Raspberry Road' to 'Dove Court,' development planned on land owned by Prince could honor singer

May 29, 2019 07:50 PM

The 188 acres of land in Chanhassen formerly owned by the late music icon Prince is a big step closer to becoming a major housing development.

Lennar Homes recently submitted its final plans for the property, including details that range all the way down to proposed street names.

Homeowners in the development could one day live on "Raspberry Road," "Dove Court," or "Alphabet Street," nods to three of Prince's many big hits, "Raspberry Beret," "When Doves Cry" and "Alphabet Street." There is also a cul de sac named "Nelson Path," in honor of Prince Rogers Nelson's last name.

I was getting ready to come here and post this.

They don't think "Paisley Parkway" will get approved because it might confuse people who are trying to find Paisley Park, but Lewis Lane, Dove Court, Raspberry Road will likely be approved.

Okay, how cool would it be to say, "I'm going down to Alphabet St." and actually mean it? lol

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Not as cool as living on it!

Awhile back we had a thread about this, and I thought the Estate told them they didn't want anything used that was Prince related in the development??

Lennar entered an option agreement in May to purchase the property. While its terms are not public, city leaders confirmed that Prince’s heirs have requested that none of the megastar’s trademarks be used in the new development.

Did you read your own quote? They said they don't want any of his trademarks used. That does not mean the developer can't call a street Raspberry Road, Dove Court or Alphabet Street. All of those names are too general to be trademarked. (You can't trademark or copyright a word that's in common usage.)

Dude, just posting what was said and I gave the link, and it has all been discussed in the Estate thread part #15.

The term trademark is also used informally to refer to any distinguishing attribute by which an individual is readily identified, such as the well-known characteristics of celebrities. When a trademark is used in relation to services rather than products, it may sometimes be called a service mark, particularly in the United States.[7]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trademark

BUT I'm up for:

Head Lane

Gett Off Blvd

Cream Rd

Love Symbol Alley

Purple Rain Rd

Nikki Way

Edited to add another link, this time from KSTP last year.

The biggest land parcels in Chanhassen once owned by Prince will soon be developed into a residential neighborhood with about 200 single-family homes. However, don't look for any streets named after Prince songs.

"There won't be a Purple Rain Parkway, there won't be a Little Red Corvette Court, there won't be a Love Sexy Lane....that sort of thing," Chanhassen Mayor Denny Laufenburger said.

He says Prince's heirs have asked the city and developers not to use any Prince trademarks in the development.

This from Luv's very own link....Not my fault that Star Tribune & KSTP reported 2 different things. And it looks like KSTP has reported 2 different things and 2 different times.

Initially, there was talk that Prince's family wouldn't allow any street names or signs that allude to the musician or his music, but Gerhardt said that is not the case.

They're stupid for doing that. It's a bad look. You can't copyright a title of a song. People can use whatever phrase or whatever they want. You could even write a new song called "Raspberry Beret" and not face ligitation from Prince's estate. Search a song title on Spotify. See how many show up with the same name. You can actually reuse a drum pattern in a song, too. So someone could literally recreate the drum pattern from "Raspberry Beret" on any drum machine, or on real drums, write a wholly different song can name it "Raspberry Beret" and be quite in their rights to do so. (An example of the drum thing: look at the songs like "Sadeness Pt 1", "Back To Life", etc in the mid 90s - there were dozens of songs with the exact same drum beat on the radio.)

So all that said, said as a larger example, someone can surely name a damn street "Raspberry Road". Prince doesn't own the words raspberry, dove, purple, peach, kiss, 1999, corvette, delirious, controversy, diamonds and pearls, purple rain, or anything else someone can come up with. So in short, no one is using his trademarks (which do include Paisley Park, prince , Prince, the Purpleaxe design, and more).

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Trademark also means:

The term trademark is also used informally to refer to any distinguishing attribute by which an individual is readily identified, such as the well-known characteristics of celebrities

For Example:
Prince has trademarked the color Purple. (doesn't mean he has a trademark, means it's readily identified with Prince).

Example: Prince has trademarked the Minneapolis Sound (doesn't mean he has trademarked the word, just means it is associated with Prince).

Informally is the keyword here. Association doesn't give someone ownership, obviously. Prince was known for a lot of things, but he didn't own all of it.

Please - just stop. I work with trademarks all the time as part of my job. They are talking about legal trademarks when it comes to these naming conventions - not some informal association between Prince and a color or word.

No they are not & I've given the links to show what was said, in fact I've given several links.

Anyways, it'll be super cool if they do this if they are allowed to.

Does anyone know if the Estate will get the money made from the selling of the land block as a whole, OR from the sale of the housing estate (individual lots with or without the house)?

Didn't he buy up land to keep it as nature reserves. Sad for his legacy if it all just gets built upon.

I'm sure I don't NEED to say this, but the street signs should be purple.

Also, there should be a graffiti bridge.

And there should be at least one really great mural somewhere in the development, hopefully several.

Street names proposed for a Chanhassen residential neighborhood to be built on property once owned by Prince will include references to the late superstar's songs and family.

.
Lennar Corp., which is developing the property, has proposed a plan with new streets named Dove Court, Raspberry Road and Alphabet Street.
