The importance of Piano & a Microphone These last shows were basically his memoirs. He didn’t just prove to the world that all a real performer needs is an instrument, a microphone and an audience to put on a good show, he was telling a story. Well many stories. He went in-depth about the inspiration and stories behind certain songs, he talked about his father teaching him rhythm, first playing the piano then saying to himself “I wish I could sing...” then of course going on to be on of the best male vocalists ever... It really felt like he was sharing with the world who Prince Rogers Nelson truly was: the young man who got himself a record deal when he was only 19; the man who got him to where he got him there This is why the estate should stop playing games and not only consider to officially release these shows, but do it properly. The main album released should be his very last show in Atlanta. That’s something Warner Bros can use to market it... “LISTEN TO PRINCE’S VERY LAST LIVE RECORDING” Disc 2 or Disc 3/4 on that set should be a compilation of Piano & a Microphone. Choose the best story-telling moments so it feels like it’s the best representation of the story Prince was trying to tell at that time. Then there should be a boxset containing all of the shows. This one is obviously for the hardcore fans.

I think from here on out that they should continue the work on cataloging and preserving the work and maximize the spotlight on the work and their investment as part of something broader that can get more people talking and sharing it. Single album releases are just going to go under the radar at this point without something else. Used to be a time he could go on talk shows or concerts and perform to draw attention to new releases, now they are going to have to be creative and add something special for people to take notice.

They played about 30 mins of the PP gala at the first Celebration and I can honestly say that as a fan of 30 years it is the best performance of Prince I have ever seen. So totally agree- release it!

Prince even said that the show at Atlanta was his best one of the P&M shows to date. He was working on releasing that one himself, and even released Black Sweat from the Atlanta show.

How hard can it be to release this short 'tour' in a box set? Very few tracks to mix, recorded on recent gear. Why go for one show plus a compilation and not the whole thing? Why can others do it but not (yet) Michael Howe? (and Comerica and such) Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

The most intimately biographic Gala show will probably be missing or they'll reduce the entire tour to one compilation 'hits' disc.

. It looks like the world is filled with incompetents in the critical places. Perhaps they should sell the soundbards to one of the bootleggars and they can do a good job.... Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

far too much common sense in your post! - they'll save it for the 20th anniversay of his passing!

Another bait n switch post only to come stating what should be released "Climb in my fur."

I will never understand why people on this site get shamed for expresing their ideas on what should be released.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It's not against them, it's just that there should be a sticky because the same ideas come back over and over. I have to say that besides the final shows, I'd find it really touching if they'd realease the show where Vanity had just passed. Prince was in a unique emotional state that night. While it sounds good "on paper" and I would definitely buy it, to this day, I personally have not been able to get through that final Atlanta show. It just breaks me down every time. And I've tried a few times.

Me too. But to think how sick he was and how great he sounded is a testament to his talent. It also shows how tough he was to be able to get through the show in the condition that he was in.

PP Gala gig was being mixed and mastered the day after - I heard it during our tour of the studios so it’s ready and we also know he videoed both shows [Edited 6/18/19 9:04am]

As some have pointed out, the story and significance of Piano and Microphone goes beyond the music itself. It really calls for something more than just a recording.

I was at both shows and I think people are making them about to be more than they are because of his passing. They were just ok to me. I was also at the party the Saturday before his passing where they played portions with the Atlanta show I think and both had audience screaming over them, I might listen to them again if they came out but not high on my list at all.

I think it’s an important story more than the shows themselves. I remember reading here at the time when he was ill that some worried about him working so hard doing two shows a day by himself when he had nothing left to prove and possibly jeopardizing his health. There is a lot more to this than just the shows themselves.

just open the vault and let anyone who pays a fee to access what THEY want

Considering that they just "found" a reel of tape in Studio A of Paisley, it really makes me wonder if the USB drive marked "Atlanta" is still just sitting in the green room.

I agree he did this type of show with a purpose. I agree it should be released.

Hmmm could get a bit confusing as they have already released -
Prince - Piano & A Microphone 1983, dont think they should have used this title.
Anyway you guys probably seen IMAV captured “Piano and a Microphone” Gala event 2016" I would pay the big bucks for this release anyday - bring it on.
