Loose! and Nine Inch Nails? I first heard Loose not too long ago, and I immediately made a connection between the sound of it and some of the earlier Nine Inch Nails work. The first connection I made was with Kinda I Want To albeit a faster version of it. Although Come came out only months after The Downward Spiral and Loose was recorded in early 1994, probably before that album released, it's fully possible that Prince may have heard some of that album before it released, or that him and Trent Reznor were coming from the same place, as the records seem to share some characteristics. Ringfinger samples Alphabet St., and Closer bears a passing resemblance to Screams of Passion. "Into the Void" is another Princely tune. I'm sure P had respect for Trent as a fellow "one man band". I can't imagine him watching GG Allin, though, that's nuts! |

Loose sounds more like some early Prodigy than NIN. Apparently he dug them too, can't remeber where I read that tho. |

I always attributed the sound of Loose to his engineer Bryan Black's influence.

Yeah that song does have a NIN vibe for sure. That sound was really hot in the '90s i remember. Prince did a good job co opting the style, I thought. | |

The first Prodigy album came out in September 1992 and the first single, Charly, was released in 1991, so it's possible Prince would have heard these tracks in clubs around that time (although at that point the Prodigy were far more popular in the UK and hadn't crossed over into the US mainstream) | |

When I first met Prince after the European Music Awards in November '94 the Prodigy were also there, staying at the same hotel. Mayte was posing with them and they seemed to be fans of each other but Prince didn't look familiar with them although 1994 was their big break with NO GOOD which also made them known outside the UK. They also played their "Voodoo People" over the speakers at the main show tent right after Prince had finished the show with PEACH. All this was after LOOSE! "Time is space spent with U" | |

Guessing it was recorded in 1993 That's true, but I feel like the whole vaguely acid house, big beat-ish sound had been circulating in clubs for a little while before Prodigy made it big. It could have been that Prince just happened to stumble onto the Loose sound by combining different things he had heard over the years. A certain kind of mellow. |
