"Space" - where the souls go...

So the "Universal Love remix" came into my YouTube suggestions today and, of course, I took a moment to listen to it again. It's such a wonderful remix.

I think it's one of the cooler remixes he did when he would take elements from the original song and made a while new song. "Loveleft, loveright" from the NPG EP is another example, as is "Violet The Organ Grinder" from Gett Off EP. The ULR almost feels like an extended section, similar to what we heard on "Thieves In the Temple" longer version.

But then I wondered, which one is better? Album version, or the Universal Love Remix - if you had to choose one.

I'm still deciding...

No offense, honestly, I have just always found these posts bizarre, because the only person that can answer that question for you...is you. It is like asking someone else to tell you what color you like better.

If I told you Universal Love Remix is better, would you stop listening to the original? Probably not right?

The remixes you mention though are all what you say they are, especially Universal Love Remix. I think the quality is indicitive of Prince doing the remixes himself rather than passing them onto a 3rd party, which will always have the typical rehash over various added beats. I think the Eye Hate U remix and TMBGITW Mustang Mix are two other good examples of this.

I like the remix. Prince doing it himself meant adding vocals, lyrics, and instruments. Passing it off to a 3rd party means no new vocals and mostly boring as hell.

Neither. The acoustic version is the best.

Definitely one of my favorite Maxi-singles ever. I like Universal Love Remix over all of the other versions. I might have to dig that one out later.

For me, any version of Space that he did live was the best. Recordings of the live performances are always the best. Love listening to them!!

What's odd about asking someone's opinion? I'm not out to get people to change my opinion. I'm engaging a group of fans - who love Prince as much as I do - in conversation about two stellar tracks. I want to know what others think is the better for themselves. So you kind of agree with me in saying everyone has an opinion. The difference is I want to hear those opinions on these two takes on "Space". I'm curious about people - maybe you're not.

Really love this song, I think this song and The Come album/era of recordings are severly under rated.

I love the Universal Love remix but the album version is great, too.

And I also love the acoustic version that Genesia mentioned above.

Space is one of those songs where I like every version a lot for different reasons.

Michael Bland once mentioned a Rock version of Space when he used to post here for a while.

Would be cool if we could get to hear it one day.

.

Love how he takes the song into a drastically different direction with each version.

A while ago I just HAD to watch the Glam Slam Miami birthday show again just to see and hear him play that guitar solo in Space. I saw a short clip of the solo somewhere online and couldn´t help but watch and hear the full performance of it. Love the Monaco 1994 live version, too.

His best maxi single, full stop, every remix is great. Great companion to the Come album.
We're here, might as well get into it.

I think the Universal Love Remix is better than the album version smile But my favorite from the maxi-single is the acoustic remix.

I love his full-on impression of Larry Blackmon throughout that remix. So much fun.

I've always loved the Universal Love Remix. It would probably be in my top 20 P tracks.

Whenever I hear someone use the word 'predicament' I can't help but say under my breath 'how did I get in this predicament...'

.

So that would be my choice but as you say it's virtually a new song so hard to make a straight comparison to the album version.

.

In straight comparisons between the album version and the Funky Stuff and Acoustic Remixes, I'd go for the album version but I do love the Funky Stuff Remix.

.

Every single one of those remixes is stellar. All of them more interesting than the album version, dare I say. I remember buying the single as a teenager and being so excited by all of the new lyrics in Universal Love, cracking up at his Larry Blackmon impression in Funky Stuff, and being completely taken away by the acoustic version. The best remixes he ever released.

I like the song Universal Love. Never much liked Space. I think the Space samples in Universal Love should be removed, it'd make it a better track. cool

(I never saw them as the same track, but completely separate songs, joined by some parts, much the same as one of the parts of the Scandalous Suite (not sure which one), that is simply another, marvelous song. Violet The Organ Grinder is not Get Off, as well...)

Good points, and I fully agree, but the fact that Prince himself calls it a Space remix right there in the song makes it a Space remix rather than a new song in its own right.

Violet the Organ Grinder on the other hand is more of its own and entirely different song and video, only connected to Get Off by being part of the maxi single and of course because of the same music or beat.

Yes, Violet The Organ Grinder was definitely a separate song with some similar “Get Off” sounds. He was definitely sending a message to a woman with that one!! eek biggrin
