Nope. I clearly remember the sticker (not the standard one we know now) on the Dirty Mind cassette back in the day. I think it was mentioned in DMSR or possibley Dave Hill's A Pop Life; that WB knew it was so salacious that it added a warning on it. Tipper's quest to censor rock music made the record companies agree to label records, but they also said "we're only doing this one warning sticker", because Tipper and her heifers wanted it rated like movies, but worse. S for Satanism, V for violenc, X for Sexuality, R for religious references, whatever for cursing. They both made each other bend, but it was still voluntary on the record company's part. Plenty of albums with cuss words on them didn't have the label, including The Gold Experience.

I am well aware of the 1999 Revolution reference. But the spine nor the credits stated that. We all know The Revolution had a trilogy of albums (just liike NPG did). No video or other reference was made anywhere to Prince and the Revolution before "When Doves Cry". That's as far down that rabbit hole as I'm going.

PS here's a cassette scan from the original release (found on Discogs) of Dirty Mind. I remember thinking "this must be a bad album" when I saw it. I was a small baptist child in Oklahoma so anything like that was taboo.

I don't disagree about the PMRC. I was engulfed watching all of it, as a 15/16 year old, back then. You're on track with that. I don't know that it was a regular thing that record companies were putting a warning label on anything. I don't remember them per se, but I was also pretty safe in my music as a kid, so I was never exposed to the naughty stuff until I purposely sought it out.

Agree. The words Lake Minnetonka always crack me up. Sorry to be such a trivia crank. I watch Jeopardy religiously and sometimes find fault with the questions. Once in awhile, they launch a clinker and still don't catch the problem during the commercial.

In the link I posted up thread, the earliest ones the PMRC originally submitted to Congress on Sept 19, 1985 were AC/DC Let Me Put My Love into You (1980) and Def Leppard Hign 'n Dry (1981). The rest were from '83 - '85.

The Parents Music Resource Center published this list in 1985. It is the top fifteen songs recommended to be banned, and their presumed subject matter.
