anymore remasters?

We had the fantastic Remaster version of Purple Rain, the deluxe version being a great package with some nice extra tracks etc.
I personally would love more of these for other albums especially Sign O the Times, Around the World in a Day and Lovesexy.

Has anyone heard if such future rereleases are planned etc?

Aren't you sweet!
In a word - no.
There are rumours that a deluxe 1999 will be released
later this year but nothing has been officially announced.

The first half dozen albums were remastered and released on the day of his death in 2016. I own For You, Prince, Dirty Mind on vinyl. The remastering credits are in there.

Really? Were they remastered only for vinyl? Because I've never seen any CD or digital download labeled "Remastered" For You, Prince, Dirty Mind, Controversy, or 1999.

.

And are you sure they came out literally on the day he passed? That seems like a massive coincidence.

I can't comment on the date. It was what it wasl. early, they were already done and reaady to come out at some point. Whether April 21 was the original date or not, I don't know. It's irrelevant to me.

And yeah, they were remastered only on vinyl. I don't know why folks ignore what is right in front of them with this issue. Some of the first albums have been remastered, and they're out for 3 years now. Period. Also, Dirty Mind and one other... was it 1999 or Purple Rain was remastered in a different time a few years ago and released. Someone on here even verified with Grundman mastering that either Bernie (or his son?) did the job for Dirty Mind. DM sounds a bit better. Of course those are demos anyway, but even on vinyl they sound better.

Now if the OP is wondering about a gazillion deluxe editions - that's another issue.

The OP may also be asking about CDs / downloads. Vinyal has not caught on with everybody.

.

And I realzie the re-mastering process would be different for CDs and downloads, which is why vinyal remastersd didn't automatically mean there would also be remasters on other media.

Honestly, vinyl never went out of style. The fact that 90s albums can be found on original vinyl pressings prove that. I remember in the mid 2000s seeing a Mary J. Blige album on vinyl.

I don't know if the albums were remastered specifically for vinyl, but they are remastered.

I personally would love to see some of his Protege's albums remastered. I would love to see new versions of Vanity 6's, Apollonia 6's, The Time's and Mazarati's albums. It would be a bit of a stretch commercial wise but i know for fans like me we'd eat it all up.

If something is not readily available at a regular retail chain then, yes, it has gone out of style. Vinyl is a specialty item now and is priced as such. Nice try, though. It's clear that if the albums were remastered, they were remastered only for vinyl. Don't act like this is some sort of common knowledge and that remastering albums specially for vinyl appeals to the masses. It does not.

According to objective sales figures, yes, it did go out of style. And even with the current uptick in sales, it's still a niche market.

DJs have always used vinyl, even when it was "out of style". It's not a specialty item at all. It was just 2017 or 2018 that vinyl outsold CDs (or digital?) for the first time in years. I'm not sure "it's clear" what medium they were remastered for, but it's entirely possible it was only for vinyl.

As far as that last statement, I never even hinted at that, so I have no idea where you got that.

You and I have very different interpretations of out of style lol. Just because something hasn't disappeared completely, doesn't make it in style.

I'm very interested in decent CD/digital remasters because I don't own a record player. And even if I do, I can't play records in my car or when walking around at lunch time.

Vinyl really isn't "speciality" anymore like the 90s and 00s, though. You go to whatever the mall music store is, Target, Wal-Mart. They all sell vinyl now. Some places like Hot Topic only carry vinyl and not CD. Younger generation cares about digital download, or vinyl. CDs are more of the niche "out of style" form of media in 2019. I've seen modern releases put out only on digital download or vinyl and not CD, I'm actually surpised they haven't tried it with us yet.

Vinyl is growing again, but it's still being outsold by CD and both are still well below 10% of music sales. Vinyl is hip now but the thing is: sooner or later people will again realise that although they look great, they are also ridiculously expensive these days (£20-30 for an album? are you kidding me?) and take up a lot of space if you want to collect them.
.
Also: regardless of what people say, the sound quality suffers from the dozens of technical compromises needed during mastering for vinyl and the results are below the quality of a 24bit/96kHz digital file (which most vinyl is sourced from, I must add...), but in many cases even the good old CD can provide a better sound than your average vinyl with all its distortion and mechanical noises and surface noises and limited dynamic range etc, etc.
.
I'm not against vinyl, I love how it can look and I love the ritual of taking a vinyl out of its sleeve and playing it – just as I love open reel machines and the ritual of putting on a reel and playing it – but neither will ever sound like a real high quality HD digital file.

These are valid points I suppose but the base of his contention was vinyl exists in 2019 solely as a "specialty" market "not readily available at a regular retail chain." This is incorrect at this moment in history, as practically every mainstream outlet that carries music carries vinyl right now.

.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the vinyl resurgance just because of the sheer proliferation of vinyl reissues where they simply took the 16-bit CD master and pressed it to vinyl. But by and large, like you noted, the "hip" vinyl subculture these days is more about gigantic artwork than pure sonics.

I don't think it's far fetched to call it a speciality market. They might have returned to a lot of stores, I'm not doubting that, and they are certainly very visible due to their size smile. But a lot of it is actually second hand, old vinyl, and even if we combine the second hand vinyl market and the new releases, they still only offer a tiny-tiny fraction of the number of titles available online, and the vast majority of vinyl releases only sell very modestly, some of it to collectors who won't even play them.

Do you see how your first two sentences contradict each other? First you say: "DJs have always used vinyl..." and then you say: "It's not a speciality item at all".

.

Yes, DJs (i.e. professionals) use vinyl. As objective sales figures prove, consumers for the most part do not. That's the definition of a "speciality item".

That's a paper tiger. They question was, "Has anyone heard if such future rereleases are planned etc?" I said there were remasters. The OP never brought up format. Let's not be obtuse. Besides, it's 2019: Rip your vinyl to lossless digital and enjoy it in your cars.

Nothing recorded digitally or mastered in a computer is going to sound any better on vinyl. Jimi Hendrix Axis: Bold As Love Mono was remastered and sent to vinyl 100% analog. Vinyl s not optimal and I paying money for something that snap, crackles, and pops after a few listens. I'm not going to put on a lab coat and special gloves jjst to get a few extra crackle-free spins out of a vinyl record. That's hipster shit. I don't wax my moustache nor do I wear a monocle.

Oh, again, I totally agree it's for the visual display piece aspect... but none of the modern retailers I mentioned sell "second hand, old vinyl." I only see used vinyl at independent retailers that never ditched vinyl, all those modern examples I provided: Target, Wal-Mart, FYE, mall stores, Hot Topic... it's all shrinkwrapped and brand new from the factory like any CD. Anyone here can go and check, I'm really not making up how common this is now. I didn't even think I really left the house that much, but it's definitely the case if you go and see for yourself.

.

I'd actually be 100% on board with the fad if it was just hipsters buying and selling used original pressings. Instead it's 20-30 bucks for a 2019 CD master on double-gram novelty colored vinyl spread out over 2-4 records.

i love vinyl due to its retro feel, but usually buy on multiple formats if there is no download code. With the PR Remaster/Deluxe edition my copies of Purple Rain increased a bit more lol......

^ Dirty Mind isn't available on HDTracks at the moment, and even if it were I'm not paying for the album again. Vinyl doesn't sound better but I'm trying to get into the practice of buying music, not stealing it off the internet. Maintaining a physcial collection helps to reinforce the habit.

That may be but elsewhere we see 24/96.
