No doubt peddling more half truths...

I'm cynical about what he says about Manic Monday, for example.

I don't think you could be more wrong. That's a great interview and perhaps you should re-read it again - specifically the parts about re-issues of other '80's albums in the same manner as "Purple Rain" was re-released.

I do wonder if, say, the "original" backing vocals on a track like Manic Monday were erased from the multitracks when Jill Jones and Brenda and whoever turned up to do them what would be a better release, the version we have now or a copy from a tape that still preserved his own backing vocals. .

SDE: You know this already, but there’s a massive appetite for what you might call the classic Prince era of the 80s. All those albums like Sign ‘O’ The Times, Parade, Around The World In A Day etc. You know, big, expanded box set editions of those albums to come out, similar to the way Purple Rain did with live stuff, 12-inch mixes, outtakes, whatever… Is that kind of thing miles away or is it…

MH: No, it’s not miles away. I mean I can’t … this is a very dicey area for me but it’s not miles away. I think there will be, you know, a couple of them will probably emerge over the next year or two, is my guess. And one of them is pretty much done.

... I bet it's 1999 deluxe lol

YES!

That's the part I kept reading over and over to ensure I interpreted it correctly.

It would be cool if he was refering to the one or two being additional to 1999!

I also thought it interesting a lot of effort has been concentrated on the very early years due to those tapes being more at risk! I can image more work is also required for those older tapes.

So maybe we'll see more releases from the first 10 years rather than the last 10 years.

lol

COOOOOOOOOOOL !!!! I didn't know that!

I suppose that would be an obvious choice but when speculation turns into rumour, you know it's gonna happen.

They just need to speed this up!!!!!!

However, I won't be negative, but we all know a Parade Deluxe could fill many discs but we'll get three CDs and a DVD if the format of Purple Rain is replicated!

lol

1999 has been indefinitely shelved. I think PAAM and Originals has thrown that scheduling off. Word on the street is another release from the Sony side may come in early fall, as I theorized before. So it won't be 1999 since that's WB stuff.

It seems that perhaps 2020 is a good time for 1999. Let the Sony release ride until the spring, then WB announce a new deluxe package in April, release it around June 7. It'd be great timing. There's a window there they could take advantage of and get that record set out.

I guess it depends how in he is with people that work in the business. I know someone way closer knowing dates etc than possibly Funkenberry. The person I know is 100% more reliable.

I have mentioned before that I really want 1999 deluxe but I actually would prefer a Parade Deluxe at this point cuz it's has been so much focus on the 81-84 era lately.

Threw it off how, exactly? Because Warner is sticking to the old pattern of not wanting to "flood the market" and diminish each release's impact? Or because the releases didn't perform as planned, so WB doesn't have enough faith that 1999 will do well?

Is there some competition between Sony and WB that is affecting this?

I realize you might not have answers - just posing the questions.

June 7 is a whole year until we get something new, that seems far too long. Unless the Sony release is something new, but I thought they were just doing reissues? June 2020 is just another year for most of us to get older and sadly some will die, which will reduce potential income to the estate. I'm still enjoying originals a great deal but don't want to wait another year for something new.

only question he shouldve been asked is what about the fully sequenced completed albums sitting in there...and they should come out first

Oh yes, you are spot on!

I feel that is indeed an important question that should have been asked!

Also he should have been asked about the projects Prince was working on at the end.

Prince was going to release the Piano Live tour and said it was ready. The Estate and Michael Howe keep spouting on about being respectful to Prince and want to do the right thing, but they have missed the very thing that is sat on their nose - that is, finish what Prince started and then go into the vault!

cool

I should have added that the Legacy releases (phase one was the purple vinyl and phase two was Ultimate rave, phase three is coming this fall) threw them off, as well. It just seems like WB is trying to find other stuff to put out that could be more diverse for public consumption. They're so worried about Sony or Legacy that they're trying to find their own space in between.

I also think Sony & WB aren't necessarily working in tandem to purposely say "okay, your turn". They're just watching to see what and when the other puts something out. Legacy feels more like "Fuck y'all, we doin' our own thing", which is fine.

Each entity should act independently and release whatever according to their own schedule.

With an imminent Sony release, plus the deal with Tidal of Originals, it seems like 1999 keeps getting the "maybe next time, dear" treatment from WB. Don't get me wrong; it's to their discredit that they've not released 1999.

I still believe the spring 2020 idea I posted is a good space for 1999, although this year would have been better, since it was 40 years old. Then again, we got Purple Rain 32 or 33 years after, because why be normal.

Prince mentioned the unreleased Prince and The Revolution, The Time and Vanity 6 albums in the vault and how it would be hearing albums from THAT time NOW. IF they wont listen to uss ...at least listen to him.

Interesting read.

Kind of a dumb question I have but what happens when they're going through these things and they have no indication of a song's actual title and no real way to confirm it? I mean, they could guess at it from the chorus or something but a song like "Crystall Ball", without knowing the title, could mistakenly be named "Expert Lover".

Hi Herb4,

I can't answer as to what would happen in this situation, however I think it's hardly likely to arise. If you take a look at these photos from inside the vault (https://www.prosoundnetwo...ip8ESSjN1E) you can see that every master tape has the song title written on the spine.

Sometimes bootleggers end up in situations where they have to guess the title from the lyrics if they are not privy to this information (eg. When all they have to go by is a band members unlabeled cassette).

Given that the estate has access to all of Prince's master tapes, lyric sheets, notes and apparently a computer database that was also kept in vault, I reckon this problem isn't going to crop up.

Very disappointing that the people that he mentions that he consults with are from the 80’s. Obviously, those are the best people for the 80’s material, but some of us are actually most interested in the vault material after the 80’s. I hope that people like Chris James and others are heavily involved.
