When Prince wrote songs for other artist?

Did he get a one time payment and/or royalties for the song also?

Like for Your My Love for Kenny Rogers, which Prince wrote under the name "Joey Coco"....

or the song Why Should I Love You for Kate Bush...

I'm not sure about a one time payment, I don't think so unless he was also officially credited as producer (which sometimes happened, in which case he may have been paid for that specific aspect of the job). But of course then he'd receive royalties and now such royalties go to the Estate. Prince made a fortune with some of those songs.

Prince didn't write Why Should I Love You?, he only played on it, and probably wasn't paid by Kate Bush for doing so. It was most likely a kind of "I'm doing you a favor" thing, and she returned the favor by singing on My Computer.

Another thing about this article (which shamelessely mixes songs written for other, covers and collaborations): Prince didn't really co-write Stand Back: Stevie Nicks based it on Little Red Corvette (it's obvious in the melody) then called Prince who played on the track and turned it into the hit it became, and as rewrad Stevie credited him as co-writers (and he got the royalties). Prince could at best be credited for co-arranging it, possibly for just playing on it, or as co-writer only in the sense it was originally based on his melody (similarly, one song on Eric Leeds' 1993 album was co-credited to Prince but only because it was partially based Desire, an earlier, released Prince song, but Prince had nothing to do with it).

.

The Bangles — "Manic Monday" (1986)

Composed and partially arranged by Prince, based on his original recording but finished without him.

.

Sinead O'Connor — "Nothing Compares 2 U" (1990)

Composed by Prince, cover.

.

Stevie Nicks — "Stand Back" (1983)

See above. Composed, produced and recorded by Stevie Nicks and her crew but inspired by another Prince song, overdubbed by Prince and finished without him.

.

Alicia Keys — "How Come You Don't Call Me"

Composed by Prince, cover.

.
Madonna — "Love Song" (1989)

Co-composed, co-arranged and co-produced by Prince and Madonna, based on his original recording but finished without him.

.
Chaka Khan — "I Feel For You" (1984)Chaka Khan — YouTube"I Feel For You" first appeared

Composed by Prince, cover.

.

Sheena Easton — "Sugar Walls" (1984)

Composed, arranged and produced by Prince.

.
The Time — “Jungle Love" (1984)

Co-composed, co-arranged and co-produced by Jesse Johnson, Morris Day and Prince but based on an original Johnson composition.

.

Cyndi Lauper — "When You Were Mine" (1983)

Composed by Prince, cover.

.
Patti Labelle — "Yo Mister" (1989)

Composed, arranged and produced by Prince.

.
Martika — "Love... Thy Will Be Done," Martika (1991)

Co-composed by Prince and Martika, arranged and mostly produced by Prince, based on his original recording but finished without him.

.
Kenny Rogers — "You're My Love" (1986)

Composed by Prince, arranged and entirely rececorded by Kenny Rogers and his crew.

.

Kate Bush — "Why Should I Love You?"Kate Bush

See above, composed arranged and produced by Kate Bush, sent to Prince who added a lot of overdubs, finally re-arranged entirely by Kate in order to save some of Prince's overdubs while keeping the song's original spirit. The only one on the list for which Prince got no royatlies.

.

See http://princevault.com/ for details on each and every song.

He got a songwriting royalty. It's a point (or however many) on an album. It's why he'd put Vanity or his dad as cowriter on certian songs, so they could get a check whenever the album/song sold. So yeah, he gets paid when The Bangles puts "Manic Monday" on different compilations, or someone covers "Take Me With U" and it sells copies. It's the same when someone samples a Prince song. They're using his song in some fashion, so he gets paid. It's his original work.

It's different than an artist royalty, like The Revolution would have gotten for being a performer on a song (play bass, keys, drums, or singing, etc).

Prince writing under "Joey Coco" has zero to do with it.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I don't believe that he ever gave royalties to Vanity, which song are you refering to?

He did it for several others, though.

About his dad, I don't believe that we have proof that he didn't do what he was credited for? There's been a strong suspicion for a long time but I'm not aware of any witness confirming either version.

"Orgasm" - credited to "She knows". It was Vanity, as we know. She was going thru tough financial times and having kidney dialysis and other problems during that time. Prince put her on that record partly so she'd have some money coming in to help pay for that stuff.

I'm pretty certain back when Prince songs could be checked on the Ascap site that Vanity had no writing credit on Orgasm. What's your source?

Yeah but I don't think that happened at all.

Well, but it did.

I want to believe you but I need evidence.

The Nislen/Tudahl research included checking publishing/copyright credits at ASCAP and the Library of Congress but neither Princevault nor the Vault book mention it.

The album liner notes do not fail to credit DH Hwang as co-writer for Solo but there is no other co-writing credit, and Orgasm is credited to Prince and published under Controversy Music only.

And no one ever noticed any such thing when all Prince songs were available on the online ASCAP database.

It's possible however that Vanity received a flat payment or royalties for her (most likely unvoluntary) contribution as a musician under the moniker "She Knows", but this has nothing to do with the topic at hand which is songwriting. So IDK, if you have evidence that she was registered as a co-writer that everyone else has missed, we want to see evidence.
