John Shipley: It’s time to let Prince rest in peace

From an article in the twin cities pioneer. https://www.twincities.co...-in-peace/

A very valid article. Personal opinion is that without the annual celebrations, licensing, various releases etc then P. Park will inevitably face financial pressure. If I am not mistaken making Paisley Park a museum of sorts was part of his plan anyway?

--------------------------------------------------------------

Start of article here:

OK, Minnesota, we need to talk about Prince. It’s time to let the man rest in peace.

In the last full week of April alone there were 15 Prince-related events one could attend in the greater Twin Cities, from a “tribute” pub crawl to last weekend’s Celebration 2019 at Paisley Park Studio, where a regular ticket cost $549 and a VIP pass was $1,049.

There’s a fine line between heartfelt tribute and brazen cash grab, and the Rubicon has been crossed. Since his untimely death on April 21, 2016, a cottage industry has sprung up around the iconoclastic, and famously private, musician.

Wherever Prince is right now, it’s hard to believe he likes what he sees. It’s one thing to honor a man’s memory, another entirely to include him in your business model....

Well that's just his opinion and who is he in the 'Prince World'? Why does it bother him so much to feel the need to write an article about it?

Elvis fans have Graceland, and it is a booming business. There is nothing wrong with having Paisley Park open or having the Celebration.

As far as the sports teams, I think it's pretty cool. Wish some of our Missouri teams would honor our 'stars' in some way.

This guy doesn't have to support anything Prince if he doesn't want to. Just don't expect everyone else not to.

I really fail to see how having a "Prince night" at a sporting event constitutes a money grab. I mean … how much extra do we REALLY think the Twins are making with their jersey giveaway? How does the Wolves wearing that special uniform enrich them?

Yeah … yeah … I know they probably have to pay something to the estate for the rights to do that. But do we really think one-off rights agreements like that are a cash cow for the estate? I can't imagine they are.

Prince might find some of it in questionable taste - but he's gone. And if his legacy is really to survive, it can't all be a matter of WWPD. Because a) none of us knows WPWD and b) everything changed when he died. The man isn't writing music or touring, anymore. This is what's left. Sad but true.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Tell it to Lenin. The communists put him under glass and people are still staring at him almost 100 years later.

Well, thats an f'n stupid article, Mr. Shipley. Less Prince is bad for everyone, especially Paisley, Minneapolis, and Prince fans wanting to keep Prince's legacy from fading into obscurity. People try way too hard to protect something that doesnt require protecting. So dumb.

(Insert something clever here)

I never understand when people say that

He/she is dead. It seems like that comment means by talking about the person 'bad or good' creating events etc wakes the soul of the person and drags them into the event.

Yes, hate the WWPD ppl...especially a writer who states Prince didn’t release a lot of music while alive lol.

My biggest complaint is the Disneyfied aspect to all of this. Dirty, edgy, sexual, gorgeously profane and the complicated nature of His Royal Badness is getting lost.

Well, with any luck, in 200 years someone will write a play called "Rogers" (channeling "Amadeus") and bring dirty Prince back to life.

Please total the Prince driven revenue stream and cache given to Minneapolis over the past 30 years and give his Estate a comparable tax break.

The thing is that PRINCE was very active and never really slowed down, he was all over the place playing and build this loyal following but also instilled that in his band members, proteges, whatever you want to call them, and also influences. No artist that has passed have i seen have the effect he had, not in terms of grief but the outpouring of keeping music going but also the fans want it because PRINCE was such a part of their lives all the time. I mean you have people that have seen Prince live over 100 times easily that is no true of any other artists following, between that all the gigs late nite parties, he just created a world that NO ARTIST has ever been close too creating. So I get what this article is saying, its time to let him rest, but this was also written by someone from the outside looking in, using comparisons of other artists who passed, which is not the same thing, those artists did not have the world he created, they may have had more fans of their music but most if not all were not very active in their music to create an ongoing loyality that Prince had.

Sounds like a grumpy old man. And it’s Minnesota. We’re not overflowing with celebrities. For me it’s a big f’n deal that someone as famous and iconic as Prince came from Minnesota and lived here most of his life. He could have gone to LA or New York and never came back. But he didn’t. He chose to call Minnesota home. Honoring him at sporting events is the least this state can do.

This is a really good point. I can't think of another artist who is more associated with where he was from than Prince - unless it's Springsteen and New Jersey.

Prince really embraced Minneapolis and Minnesota. It'd be weird if they didn't love him back.

ya, i don't get it either but some stories, there's one on this site I think, where someone dug up an earing or something and a ghost haunted them until they reburied it, strange shit happens. Yesterday, I was meditating on a pastor I knew when i was young, for the briefest of moments i could feel his presence, not that that means anything but I do wish i could talk to him.

Just saw today that the father of jazz, buddy Bolden has a movie coming out his time was before recorded music so he's really a pioneer.

The use of Prince's image, or folks capitalizing on anything Prince related that they can, will never end. The flood of memoirs is proof of that. Unfortunately, as time goes one, and technology improves, hologram Prince will be everywhere. For many reasons that would be a travesty, but as more and more become desensitized to the idea of this, we will be seeing this happen without much debate.

It is a shame people think they need to dress like Prince, be Prince, or create a brand new Prince, in order to honor his memory. None of that honors his memory. I honor his memory every day, by playing his music, talking to others about his legacy, and appreciating what he has personally brought to my life.

that's quasi religious in terms of how people would "worship" a deity, i covered prince before he died, i still do and will, i also have my own music, all of it or at least a lot of it, has a piece of him in it, I honor him the best I can. of course some people don't want to see that because they are possessive of the man. elvi's inner circle didn't like impersonators, one called them "asshats" which i giggled over, mainly because i've done it, onstage, in front of hundreds and I was doing my best to honor the man and they seemed to like it. Of course I can understand people who knew the man, all his foibles and virtues, and see anyone imitating him as an insult, but i'm not meaning no harm and I had a lot of fun doing it, and i don't do it everyday all day. It's all a part of me as a musician.

The last thing he'd want is to be forgotten or left alone, or resting in peace in the sense that he's not being discussed. remembered, honored, loved, speculated on etc. He wanted the same level of attention that MJ, Tupac and Biggie received in their deaths.
