What If Your First Favorite Prince Song Never Existed

If the Prince song/album that made you the Prince fan that you are today never existed, then what subsequent release by Prince would have started you on the journey?

For me, if “When Doves Cry” never existed, and by extension nor would have the LP Purple Rain, then it would have taken a few more years to get into Prince.

Around the World in a Day would have come across too much like a Sgt. Pepper attempt rather than something that was so surprisingly different than what would have been Prince’s 1984 output. “Raspberry Beret” would probably be nothing more than a summer jam favorite.

In 1986, “Kiss” would have become my favorite Prince song, but I probably wouldn’t have thought too much about buying Parade because I wouldn’t have been interested in seeing the movie Under the Cherry Moon, especially since there’d be no Purple Rain movie beforehand to get me excited about a follow up feature film.

But in 1987, even though “Sign o’ the Times” the single would not have been enough to turn me into a hardcore Prince addict, Sign o’ the Times the album would have done the trick. After reading all the critical praise the album garnered and hearing the singles “U Got the Look” and “If I Was Your Girlfriend” on the radio, not to mention the deep cut radio favorite that is “Adore,” I definitely would have purchased the album and my Prince obsession would have started from there. With the releases of “Good Love” and “Alphabet St” the following year, it’d be a sure bet that my excitement and anticipation for Prince material would continue on from there and never waver.

I think great musicians always fand their fan base, and those who love great music find it eventually. For me, I found Prince on a K-Tel album, Soundwaves, when "I Wanna Be Your Lover" was tucked in the middle of side one. My discovery of Prince could have come about in another way had my mother never bought me that record at the Target on the corner of SW 44th and Western in Oklahoma City. But who knows - I think even without that, "When Doves Cry" or "Little Red Corvette" would've put him on my radar. It's all serendipity anyway.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

The first Prince song I remember loving as a kid was "Batdance"... it's a fun track but I'm pretty sure I would have gotten into him eventually anyway

it would be different, little red corvette is practically a holy song for me. but he was prolific enough that there were plenty of others that were almost as great. It was obvious to me listening to controversy, the song, that this guy had a gift that not everyone else had.

I knew who Prince was back in the day (80's) but I didn't care for him. Then I saw the WHEN DOVES CRY video, and I have been in love4 with him ever since. <3

For me, my first favorite Prince song was "Just As Long As We're Together" and if that song never existed, "Sexy Dancer" would have won me over.

almost same scenario here...just replace 'Just As Long As We're Together', with " My Love Is Forever"...but "Sexy Dancer" sealed the deal...

If my favorite Prince song never existed, I guess I wouldn't know about it.

If "Lady Cab Driver" never existed, then 1999 would still have been a classic album, and I still would have been obsessed with Purple Rain, the album that made me a devoted Prince fan.
