Prince Estate to Release ‘Originals’ Album: His Versions of Songs He Gave to Other Artists (EXCLUSIVE)

It’s a rare singer-songwriter who can just give away undeniable hits like “Nothing Compares 2 U,” “Manic Monday” and “The Glamorous Life” to other artists, but that’s exactly what Prince did throughout his 40-year career.

And on his birthday, June 7, the late artist’s estate, in partnership with Warner Bros. Records and Tidal, will release “Originals,” a 15-track album featuring 14 previously unreleased recordings by Prince of such songs. The tracks were selected collaboratively by Troy Carter, on behalf of The Prince Estate, and Jay-Z.

Starting June 7, “Originals” will stream ...or 14 days. The announcement notes, “In the spirit of sharing Prince’s music with his fans as he wanted, the album will be available to stream in Master quality via Tidal’s HiFi subscription tier. Members will be able to hear the recordings just as the Artist intended the tracks to sound.”

Members will be able to hear the recordings just as the Artist intended the tracks to sound.”

Prince Rogers Nelson

On June 21, Warner Bros. will release the recordings, sourced directly from Prince’s archive of “Vault” recordings, via all download and streaming partners and physically on CD, while 180 gram 2LP and limited edition Deluxe CD+2LP formats will follow on July 19th. (Pre-order the album here.)

Prince was a monumentally prolific artist and by the mid-1980s, in addition to releasing nine of his most commercially successful albums, he also wrote and recorded many dozens of songs for proteges The Time, Vanity 6, Sheila E., Apollonia 6, Jill Jones, the Family, and Mazarati. Often, Prince’s original demo recordings would be used as master takes on their albums, with only minor alterations to the instrumentation and a replacement of the vocal tracks. Other times, artists would rely on his demos to guide them through their own recording process, with Prince’s initial take informing their final version of his song.

“Originals” reveals the origins of these songs — many of which were substantial hits — along with deeper album cuts such as Vanity 6’s “Make-Up,” Jill Jones’s “Baby, You’re a Trip,” and Kenny Rogers’ “You’re My Love.” The only previously released song is Prince’s original 1984 version of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which was released in 2018 as a standalone single (and as a stellar live duet with Rosie Gaines in 1993). The song was originally released in 1985 by The Family, and made into an unforgettable No. 1 single by Sinead O’Connor five years later.

Song Title First Released by (Artist: Album – year) Year of Prince’s Recording Included on Originals

2. Jungle Love The Time: Ice Cream Castle – 1984 1983
3. Manic Monday The Bangles: Different Light – 1985 1984
4. Noon Rendezvous Sheila E.: The Glamorous Life – 1984 1984
5. Make-Up Vanity 6: Vanity 6 – 1982 1981
6. 100 MPH Mazarati: Mazarati – 1986 1984
7. You’re My Love Kenny Rogers: They Don’t Make Them Like They Used To – 1986 1982
8. Holly Rock Sheila E.: Krush Groove (OST) – 1985 1985
9. Baby, You’re a Trip Jill Jones: Jill Jones – 1987 1982
10. The Glamorous Life Sheila E.: The Glamorous Life – 1984 1983

This is turning into a GREAT year!!!!

New Prince music is always good news, but...

.

1/ My main concern is the authenticity of the tracks: have they been remixed/overdubbed like NC2U last year? Actually this would be the Estate's chance to redeem themselves by releasing the original NC2U the way Prince left it. I really, really hope they did the right thing.

.

2/ The tracklist is debatable. I find it relatively messy. I would rather have kept the side-projects tracks (Time, 6's, Sheila, Jill) for later rereleases of said side-projects, and focused on random songs such as the Kenny Rodgers or Taja Sevelle ones. I would also have preferred a more cohesive/time-focused compilation: having LTWBD on the same record as a Vanity 6 track is, well, maybe not the best choice. In the end I wonder what was the logic in selecting those songs above the dozens of available tracks. Let's see how it plays in sequence though...

.

3/ I was quite surprised to see that it's not titled Originals, Vol. 1. This could obviously become a series, since there are so many other songs.

.

I would prefer an album of new music leading up to his transitioning. But I've also wanted to hear his versions of songs he gave away to other artist in a remastered form. But this new project is more commercial and would sell well. Because it attracts the attention of his casual & diehard following.

Credit is due to Jay Z and Tidal for delivering something unexpected on this one. In fact I really enjoyed Prince's time with Tidal...brings me to my question. Was the estate better off allowing Jay Z and Tidal to buy the rights to his releases vs whoever they whenever dealing with now?

Wow, some folks just never happy here. We are getting Prince's version of 14 songs he did for other artists in perfect quality, how is that just not amazing? All the bitching about the estate, regardless of content, this is a step in the right direction for sure, and it is definitely the most exciting release since his passing imo.

Someone mentioned mixing and overdubs, and hoping they don't take liberties like they did on Nothing Compares 2 U.......I also hope they leave stuff as is.......but what liberties or additions did they add to that song? It is the first I heard of it being altered from how Prince finished it.

I can't lie, I'm a little bummed out that "G-Spot" isn't on here. More than that, though, I'm excited to finally have a new release that isn't just a piano rehearsal!

I'd like to have seen focussed releases on the major proteges--full or nearly full collections of Sheila, Time, Vanity/Apollonia 6, The Family (though I guess we have all of those)... and having those acts represented on this might make later releases of that sort less likely... BUT YAY!!!!!!!!

I'm not gonna be moping about this at all. I doubt they're going to really be untampered with (though we can hope), but I'm still excited. And I've been hoping for You're My Love for quite awhile. So GREAT! I'm doing my happy dance.

Extremely disappointing since I was hoping to see post 96 vault material with the Tidal release.

They couldn't even give us the Prince vocal version of Nasty Girl or 777-9311? Or a different Family song?

I guess I'll buy it but only if it's under $10.

With This Tear would have made an epic addition to this set. Especially since all we have to go on is Celine's completely redone version.

I didn't know that wanting the most popular Vanity 6 song or something like The Screams Of Passion was considered trolling these days lol
