We had no facinating electrical devices, and sometimes you got very bored unless you could make up something yourself to do. Especially in the summertime. But, late at night, we here in the cultural desert of the midwest could "sometimes" get WLS radio out of Chicago. (Boring scientific stuff like the raising of the ionosphere, etc...)

Some of the obvious influences on Prince are of course, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Sly & and the Family Stone, Joni Mitchell, George Clinton, Stevie Wonder,and his own father, John Nelson. But wow, think of all the other Soul, Jazz, Rock, and other kinds of music that was just going crazy at that time. You were no longer required to stay in a musical "box" or style, and most artists really played the instruments you heard on their records.

While deep in my listening lab upstairs, these are some other artists I hear running through his music: The Staple Singers, Grand Funk Railroad, the Moody Blues, the Dramatics, George Benson, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Marvin Gaye, Friends of Distraction, Tower of Poower, Chicago, Leon Haywood, Blue Mitchell, Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose, Lou Rawls, and Martha Reeves & The Vandelias, Chicago, Electric Light Orchestra, and REO. What do you hear sometimes??

We had fascinating electrical devices: radios, record players, 8-tracks, little transistor radios. Just different versions of today's devices.

Top 40 in the mid-1960s was a mix. We had rock, pop, the blues, show tunes, all mixed into that playlist.

i don't think he'd have even been able to make it in todays world. Too much substance and that's the opposite of all the rest of these kids who grew up on american idol and youtube and have been brainwashed that they're all celebritites in their own delusional world. The singing? It's perfect, feminine, and phoney as fuck with everyone copying everyone else. I guess Mj and Prince had their hand in the whole fem bullshit that these boys today emulate but those guys had real nitty gritty depth to their singing and came from places where they learned from people who had it. These kids today make me sick.

Yeah, it was just part of the curriculum in the 70's. I loved being in band even though I really didnt prove to be much of a musician. At least I immerse myself in it there!
