Great song! Absolutely love the acoustic version. The performance he did at his last concert is amazing as well!

I love it! That guitar work is so funky. Sooner or later I'm going to get the lyrics down and incorporate this one into my set list every now and then.

Recorded in 2014 w/3rd Eye Girl
My guess: Andy A as it seems kind of recent and raw, though it fits Manuela too:

I love the track and for me it was the highlight of the entire Yahoo album release party in 2014. It was fresh, new and unexpected of him. Friends don't let friends clap on 1 and 3.

bloody love it, especially the end when they fall about laughing. The lyrics are some the best F.U. to my ex he's ever done!

Also, could have been Mayte, because she was doing Hollywood Ex's during that time, mocking him quite a bit on the show and on Twitter, and also trying to sell a bunch of his personal items. * I doubt it was connected to Andy A, as it does not seem like there was anything that deep going on there. I always viewed that relationship as more of a mentor/young musician thing, but I could be wrong. * I don't think the Teresa/Whore lyric would have applied to Manuela, because she married Eric Benet and had two kids with him. If anything, Mayte's behavior was more reflective of that lyric.

Respectfully disagree. Really do not think he was that vulnerable with either of the M's. I don't get the feeling that either of them would generate too much feeling in 2014 It was recorded in 2014, way after the M's. I personally think he was in love with Andy. Her photo remained in his home and her love letter was found in his suitcase at the end.
Of course it could have been written before 2014 Never know with Prince.
Anyway, this is all I will say on this. Off to the movies!

I said I don't care and basically I don't but I am curious why it just HAS to be lyrics about Prince's life, this was something he played with 3 other women. I didn't look. But. Is there info on who wrote the lyrics? He has sung lyrics written by other people before, I know that. Did Mani smoke cigars? Did Mayte? or Andy for that manner? Idk, maybe there is something new to learn. Anybody know? Time keeps on slipping into the future...

The lyric "nightmare runnin' in place while your puppeteers give chase, danglin' from your devil cigar..." is a play on words - he's not talking about a literal cigar or cigarette being smoked by the woman he's singing about. He's talking about her lack of character and/or morals. * Prince is listed as the "assumed" writer on princevault.com. The lyrics seem to have definitely been written by him.

A paper with the handwritten lyrics to his 1986 song "You Got The Look" was also found in his suitcase at the end, so I don't think we can make too many assumptions about what was found. * The lyrics "trapped in the past, you're goin' nowhere fast..." definitely speak to a lover from his distant past - not a more recent relationship. Seems he's implying that the woman is hanging on to things that connected her to him or the time they were together. He had also been feuding with Susannah during this time, because of the fDeluxe releases, so who really knows. She was doing lots of interviews, contributing to Biographies, and finally talking about their personal and working relationship which she had never done before. I'm sure he was NOT happy about that. They were fighting. She had a "made shitty pay at PP" comment under the Former Employer section of her FB page back then. * The lyric "you broke my heart a dozen times without even knowin'" also speaks to someone from his past.

Well, because who would literally be "dangling from her devil cigar"?? No one can physically dangle from an actual cigar, which is why the phrase is figurative and not literal. Prince wrote many lyrics like this - either cryptic, or by using "word play" or figurative language to tell the story. He was quite an amazing lyricist that way. He could take a simple point and make it sound much more interesting or unique. * From princvault.com: * Indifference was initially streamed as an acoustic performance video in part (with no title given) during the Yahoo! Live album release party for Art Official Age and Plectrumelectrum by Trevor Guy from video facilities in Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (along with the full video ofPlectrumelectrum). The following year, on 7 september 2015, the full video was streamed on Tidal as part of Prince's new presence on the streaming platform (on the same day as the Tidal stream of Hitnrun). While specific recording dates are not known, it is assumed to have been recorded in 2014 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

that line about the puppeteers dangling from her cigar is particularly interesting . I cannot understand it but thanks for the interpretations ...any others.could the song be about Tyka? or am I stretching [Edited 4/3/19 7:24am]

Anything's possible, but it seems to be connected to a past love interest. I don't think he and Tyka were fighting at that time, because she had been working for him - although, his siblings were always in and out of his life. * The lyrics are very creative and quite aggressive too. Whomever the inspiration, it was definitely someone he felt really hurt him. The line "you broke my heart a dozen times without even knowin'" is interesting too, because it seems to speak to someone who still affected him even after the breakup.

A gem of a song with a light breezy arrangement. Prince and a guitar, and limited percussion.

- Very interesting Lyrics... a bit 'weird' coming from ... Prince. - if women fuck around they are called 'whores' If men fuck around, they're called (just) 'pigs' (Why aren't men called 'whores' ? cause that what most of us are, right? ) (women basically never choose to be a whore...) - Prince sings about someone who cheated on him and uses the word 'whore' to describe her 'acts'. Now what did he do all these years when he was still around breaking countless women's hearts in and outside his own camp ?! - Question these lyrics. Does it matter about whom he sings ? (It's mostly about him(self), no ?) For once his heart is broken and all he wishes is 'bad' things for her (...) that's not 'indifference', that's called hate, and hate is very close to love. (Indifference is on the other side of the spectrum). Indifference means that you don't even need to talk about it anymore, that's how much one cares. Let alone writing a song about it. - Lyrically, this song really doesn't make any sense concerning the title, but tells a lot about some level of emotional intelligence that Prince had (for that matter and subject). He once wrote a song 'Eye Hate U', now that was a good lyrical approach of the subject feeling hurt but someone. It doens't leave you indifferent. - (Or maybe he meant it tongue-in-cheek-ish... then i'm wrong of course.) -
