Amazing Guitar Solo: Space Glam Slam Performance

Space in 94 Glam Slam performance, is a masterpiece. Might be one of his most underated guitar solo performances...

I´m not sure I´ve heard that one. Maybe I have but I don´t remember, I wasn´t even aware that he played it again after playing it in Monaco.

What I´d love to hear is the rock version of Space that Michael Bland once mentioned here on the org.

I´m going to look for the Glam Slam version now....you got me curious.

You've probably come across it over the years. The boot is even on iTunes now; 3 Nights Live In Miami 1994. The shows were filmed and screened on The Box channel.
.
Some great moments across the shows incl Space, 319 extended, Hide The Bone and Shoop with raps from Sexy M.F, Gett Off and Acknowledge Me

I think I have night 2 and 3 on DVD somewhere but I´m pretty sure I don´t have this show with Space. I looked up the setlist on Princevault and he played some amazing songs that night.

Love this era, love this very tight incarnation of the NPG and I wish he would´ve played songs such as Space and I Hate U a bit more often back then.

I saw a couple of these shows and aftershows back in the day and it was an amazing time to be a Prince fan, at least for me. He´d play so many new songs and the shows oozed energy.

You can even tell from this one minute snippet that there´s a very energetic and funky vibe in the air. That Glasgow snippet that was discussed the other day also had that high energy vibe but this Space clip is on some whole different level.

The whole aura he has while playing the guitar is so amazing.

1994-1995 were just great. I liked 1996, too, but the Come , Gold Experience and Exodus phase was something different.

Agree with all this.

What a time to be a fan. It was so good hearing all these new songs, and there was a constant stream of maxi-singles, videos, albums of sorts.

I found my DVD of this show and have just finished watching it.

Great times, great shows.

The sampled instruments and vocals are a bit odd in hindsight but this version of the NPG will always be my favorite.

Space is such a great song, and I like what he did with it, especially on the maxi single...Universal Love Mix, Acoustic....just great.

Did he ever play a full version of I Hate U live during this period? I would love to hear that if it exists, but when I search my bootleg folders it only turns up a very few brief renditions during 1995. Definitely a song he could have played more often.

Yes, was always played in a medley with Billy Jack Bitch and 319.
He may have played a bit more of it on the Japan '96 tour than the AMA performance. Shame as one of the best tracks from the era IMO

Not that I know of, and I´ve only heard it as part of a medley. I wonder why he rarely played Space and I Hate U . Both are great songs, and I Hate U charted pretty high back then even though it received minimal promotion. Many of my friends who were not really into Prince back then really liked that song. It had a lot of chart potential.

"Come" and "The Gold Experience"- and especially the former - punched way above their weight class, if you know what I mean.

Ah okay, yeah real shame those tracks didn't get more of an airing live, love em both. Seems there were a few full performances of Space in the 1990s, but I can't find any for Eye Hate U.

The two full renditions of Space that I´m aware of are Monaco 1994 and the above rendition from South Beach. I´ve looked at Princevault but couldn´t find a specific info on further dates or locations.

There's also a soundboard full performance of it from 14th July 1994 at the Palladium in New York that came out on a bootleg comparatively recently I think.

Great version, also with guitar at the end.
That Palladium Show is well worth seeking out as well as the Roseland Ballroom show from the same leak.
Best of all from one of those was the soundcheck when they played Hallucination Rain

Is that the one where he played a great version of Shhh... and said "New York, all women are beautiful !" at the end ?

I have that on cassette somewhere but I am not aware of Space being part of the setlist that night.

But I´ll have another look. If it wasn´t for you I probably wouldn´t have looked for my Glam Slam DVDs again and found that I indeed already have that live version of Space from the short clip above. So thank you! lol

This is the one. Not sure if you’ll have it on cassette, it only leaked in the last couple of years

I just looked up the Palladium 1994 shows on Princevault, and there were three on the same day, and I´m pretty sure I have one of them on cassette but not the one with Space, so yes, you´re right, it must be the one that leaked a couple of years ago. Will have to search for that now. I wasn´t even aware of that.

The solo is perfect. So much vibe. I'd love to have a real soundboard quality copy of this or another performance of Space with the guitar solo.

The Palladium NYC is ‘from the soundboard’ and has guitar at the end
